Hello there

I have what seems to be a nasty virus.

I was on a website, not an unusual or naughty one!!! And suddenly my computer closed down. I switched it back on, tried to fire up firefox, and it automatically went to a screen saying I needed to download some virus software. Same with Explorer. These windows starting closing themselves down as quick as I could open them.
I ran my free AVG scan, and a spyware doctor scan, and they turned up nothing.

What appeared to be my windows firewall thing popped up and said I had win32.zafi.b

I did manage to download what appeared to be a removal program for said virus, and it turned up nothing. But now I'm reading that there are new visuses around, which pose as other viruses.

Now firefox doesn't open at all, messenger doesn't open and explorer does for a bit but then closes. I'm doing all this forum stuff through another computer, which I am borrowing.

I'm REALLY hoping you guys can help me.

I've read the forum, and here is the log... I am not very computer competent, so please excuse me if I am slow on the uptake =)

Here are the results from the look thing..

Haha.
Okay, the bad guys have changed this malware slightly, so it's not in it's old hiding place and I got it wrong, but I know where it should be hiding now.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
    type peek1.txt >> look.txt
    del peek1.txt
    start notepad look.txt

  • Save this as look.bat, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click look.bat to run it.
  • Copy and paste the report back here.

Step two... Killbox... no check. "This file does not seem to exist".

No, DDS newly created files didn't list so I suspected it didn't exist, but wanted to try killing it anyway to make sure.

What problems remain?

=D I reconnected to the internet just now after you asked what problems remain and I'm happy to report that I believe it's working as it was before!!! So unless you know of some herpes-like traces that get left behind, I think I'm all cool!!!
You think?

Thank you so much for your help. It's bonkers that so many people - me included - are so reliant on something that we just DO NOT understand. There is NO WAY ON EARTH I could have worked out any of what you took me through - even having been shown it, I still don't understand what we did! So really, thank God that there are dudes like you stopping us from being kicked around =)
Thanks a million for your help.
I will recommend the site at any possible occasion.

Sounds like you've worked in the industry. The Fight sounds fascinating, I don't know the details of how and why this stuff comes about - maybe you shoudl have a section on yoru website! Or maybe that's looking for trouble, who knows.

Thanks again though and I'll check back when I've done these bits.

Does that mean something to do with the virus or is that just a separate thing?

descriptionplease help, with log EmptyRe: please help, with log

more_horiz
No, a separate thing.
You had old versions of Java installed, after you installed the new version, JavaRa removed trace of old versions so that when using Java online, it doesn't load an old version and malware can't abuse it.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Hello.
Did it reboot after the scan was done?
Lets take a look around.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click No for Optional Scan.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Hello.
Looks good, just one leftover.

Please download the Pocket Killbox from HERE

1. Open the Killbox.
2. Under "Full path of file to delete", copy and paste in the following:

c:\windows\system32\vnwdfkyc.dll

3. Press the Red X to delete the file.
4. It will ask if you want to make a backup of the file we deleted, select Yes to the prompt.
5. It will now delete the file, and popup with another prompt saying so, press Ok.
6. Close the Killbox.

Delete this folder:
C:\!Killbox

Delete DDS.com from your desktop.
What problems remain?
