Hi I need help with a program that's been detected on my computer. It says it's called Spyware.Ispynow and my computer has been slowing down at an exponential rate as well as the program blocking off programs such as SuperAntiSpyware and access to sites like McAfee. I've read that some people have had success with removing it through SuperAntiSpyware or MalwareBytes, but I can't open either of those programs nor access the sites.

Here is the HijackThis log:

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SVCHOST.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winhpdrv] "C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Application Data\Google\xtgoj6119471.exe"

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Delete these two files in bold:
C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Application Data\Google\xtgoj6119471.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe

  • Download combofix from here, use the top links - combofix.exe
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Need help with Spyware.Ispynow Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.

  • You will this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Need help with Spyware.Ispynow Whatne10

Hello.
Looks good.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\TDSSserv.sys]

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

What problems remain?

I'm a little confused. Did you want me to type that into a notepad file and save as you said to?

Am I supposed to include the

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Or did you want me to just put this:

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\TDSSserv.sys]

Also, did you want another HJT log or something to check if any problems remain? Or was it just a general question in asking if I could still see any problems on the surface while using my computer?

Thanks again!

Hello.
Please make sure you have Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 included as the top line or the registry fix won't work.

I was asking as a general question. Smile... Does the machine seem faster than before?

Going to reboot my computer and see how everything is now. So far, I notice that there are no more popups from my Firewall indicating that the Spyware.Ispynow is threatening my computer, so that's good. Also, before I couldn't really open my browsers and now it seems as if I can surf the web like normal again. The speed of my computer also seems to be back to normal.

Just rebooted. Wonderful, seems everything is fine again. Before the virus was prohibiting my from using SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes but now I can once again open both of those programs. I think we're good now then! One question though. I currently do not have an anti-virus program (other than Windows Defender) and was wondering if I should go download Avast as this program was linked before on this site regarding anti-virus programs.

Also, just out of curiosity..I know that before I thought of posting my HJT logs here, I was looking for some ways to fix this problem and saw in a Yahoo! Answers post by a user that he recommended that we go to the Device Manager and show hidden devices. This allowed me to see the Non Plug-N-Play drivers and I remember specifically disabling and uninstalling the TDSSserv.sys driver that was running in there as this was found to be part of the problem by some users online regarding this particular malware. Seeing as I just ran the registry thing with that same exact name, I was wondering what the connection was? And was I not supposed to have disabled and uninstalled it in the first place? I did notice the conditions getting slightly better after initially doing so though..

Again, thanks for all your help! It's greatly appreciated and I'm glad that I was able to resolve all this in under 24 hours as I have upcoming finals that I need to study for! Thanks!!!!! Thank You!

Hello.
Disabling it was the right thing to do. Smile... it allowed you to download combofix.

Yes, I'd recommend you run avast! anti-virus.

The reg fix was just to remove the leftover service.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Okay sounds good. I have downloaded most of the programs that you have listed and took all the advice from the linked articles. One quick question about overlapping programs though. Currently, I only have Windows' built-in firewall, no anti-virus, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware.

I am now adding Outpost Firewall, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, and SpyBot Search and Destroy to my arsenal. Am I overlapping any programs or am I good to go with these 7 programs?

Thanks again for all your help, it's greatly appreciated!

Yes, you are.
You NEED an anti-virus. Antispyware programs like Spywareblaster won't kleep you safe. Please select one from this list:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Also - You don't need all the programs I recommended, all of them will do the same job. Just have one or two. In my opinion, Spywaregaurd and MBAM/SAS will keep you safe. You can uninstall spywareblaster and Spybot.

Okay, so now I am currently running SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, MBAM/SAS, default Windows Firewall, and Avast.

This should be good then I'm assuming? Let me think
