Maybe my weirdest attempt at photoshop [indepth]

Here's my guess. For the first on you used a difference cloud. It doesn't really show anything much, especially not a nebula. Nebula has more black areas and they usually don't contain white clouds.

na just a normal cloud which i used with gradient to difference the thing... any kind of like opinion on what to use to get a realistic nebula?

It's a picture real nebula...

Perhaps this looks more like a nebula to you.
