Hello,

I recently plugged my WD 1TB Passport drive into my Samsung Smart TV to play some videos.  The TV was reading the files at first but then froze up like it was trying to process the data.  I thought this was normal because the drive has over 900gb of data on it.  After about ten minutes of the drive freezing I shut off the tv and disconnected the drive.  I then went to plug in the drive to my Windows 10 laptop and the laptop makes the beep sound like it is recognizing the drive but the drive never shows up in "My Computer" area to click on it to open it.  My main concern is being able to access the data on the drive again, and if need be, transfer it to a new drive.

Any advice on how to access the drive in order to transfer the data.  Did the tv possibly mess up the formatting on the drive or mess up the partitioning?  I did try using a different usb cable with the drive as well as plugging the drive into another computer...no luck.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @EricJ

The external HDD possible failed if it was damaged NTFS file system Windows would have ask you to format the external HDD which it has not there isn't much we can do you can use WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool to confirm external drive has failed or not also try repair it.

Before we throw this HD to the wolves or to a data recovery place, how about we examine the possibility that the TV cannot read the on-board/circuitry-level encryption of the files.

4/1a3 addendum: I might have jumped the gun here; I was assuming this was the first time the HD and the TV "talked" to each other. If the setup worked before but not now -- I have no answer.
