There are a few services that will allow you to select to opt out of many top level sites' behavioral and interest-based ads and advertising schemes. Such services do not opt out of ads themselves, but targeted ads that use your personal information and browsing habits. For opting out, these services set a cookie usually to save your preferences, which could easily expire or be deleted occasionally; however, some services have a browser add-on, which helps save the options more permanently. Nonetheless, these services are free and are fully professional and trusted, so you know this endeavor is effective. Some are umbrella services; others are individual sites. The first is the Digital Advertising Alliance's Consumer Choice Page: Opt Out DAA
When you access this page, you will see the following box that will enable you to select and opt out of different ads:
You may see the results of the opt outs on the third tab:
Or you may just hit the following button to opt out of as many as possible:
If you are interested in the add-on program from the DAA to make your choices more permanent, please go here.
Second, is the NAI: Network Advertising Initiative's Consumer opt-out page located here: NAI opt-out
This is similar to the DAA, except you have to do these ones too. Similar box to edit and submit opt-outs:
See existing opt-outs:
Or hit this button to choose all possible opt-outs:
Please note, the NAI expresses the following, which could be for any opting out of any initiative: “Opting out does not mean you will no longer receive online advertising.”
If you are interested in the add-on program from the NAI, you can use the same add-on as DAA to make your choices more permanent, please go here. It is not necessary to install the add-on more than once. It will cover all the opt-outs from both sites.
To opt out of Yahoo Ads network, please see the following page: Yahoo Ad Interest Manager
Ensure to use both tabs to opt out. In addition, ensure to delete any categories you have selected for interests, so it does not give them a reason to show ads personalized to you:
