Hello,
I tried downloading a job application and when I did, a whole bunch of windows opened up and wouldn't stop. It took me an hour to shut them all down. Did a scan with my McAfee security and it said it fixed 652 fixes out of 682.At least I can now get on the internet, but it is still to slow.
Please advise.
Val

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Try in Safe Mode with NetWorking. If that doesn't work, you will have to download the program on another computer and transfer them to your computer.

I am not sure this scanned all the way through. Maybe you can tell by the post. It looked like it froze up at beginning of scan then I just cleaned it cause it gave me that option. Wow. It was hard to get into to do the scan. Will try malwarebytes next.

The Malwarebytes and the Anti Root will not allow me to scan. I tried every which way. Disabling my AV, run as administrator, pin to start menu, ect. I just get a message saying : Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access this item.
Please advise.

UPDATE: Scanning anti root in Safemode now.

Second Scan Anti Root was clean. Still has hesitation when clicking on an icon or anything else. Also I have a picture in the photo gallery explaining what happened to my files and how to get the files back. It says HELP DeCRYPT. The other icon leads to a web site called giggapaysun.com to a service to help decrypt the files. Not sure what that is all about. It is a new thing that came up a couple days ago.

Looking over your log it seems you don't have any antivirus software.

Before we continue download and install a free antivirus.

Remember to only install one antivirus!

1) Avast! Home Edition
2) AVG Free Edition
3) Avira AntiVir Personal
4) MicroSoft Security Essentials All versions and all languages.
5) Comodo Antivirus (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" if you choose this one)

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

First Verify your Java Version

If there are any other version(s) installed then update now.

Get the new version (if needed)

If your version is out of date install the newest version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment.

Note: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Be sure to close ALL open web browsers before starting the installation.

Remove any old versions

1. Download JavaRa and unzip the file to your Desktop.
2. Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
3. Once complete exit JavaRA.

Additional Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and reboot your computer.

I have McAfee Internet Security on this laptop. It is updated, has anti virus and firewall protection that is all active. I checked the add/remove program list and it is there. Wonder why it didn't show up on the scan? Do you want me to download another or not?

Your Windows Security Center is not turned on. You should really turn this on. It will report if something happens to your security. You should also disable your Windows Firewall if your AV has a firewall. Two active firewalls will cause conflicts.
Do you want me to download another or not? .

No, as long as you keep your AV updated.

Can not run ESET. When it begins to initialize, i get a red message that says "Unexpected Error"  Please advise. Is there another scan I can do?
Can not turn on Windows Security Center on ...gives me the same message= Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You many not have the appropriate permission to access this item. I have tried everything. Is there any scan that can fix this message. It is not allowing me access to anything?

Do you have the Vista disk? Please do even if you don't have the disk. Please tell me if it asks for the disk

1/ Click the Start button.

2/ From the Start Menu, Click All programs followed by Accessories.

3/ In the Accessories menu, Right Click on the Command Prompt option.

4/ From the drop down menu that appears, Click on the Run as administrator option.

5/ If you have the User Account Control (UAC) enabled you will be asked for authorisation prior to the command prompt opening. You may simply need to press the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password etc.

6/ In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow and then press Enter.

7/ A message will appear stating that the system scan will begin.

8/ Be patient because the scan may take some time.

9/ If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Vista DVD for this process to continue.

10/ If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.

11/ After the scan has completed, Close the command prompt window.

You get this message when you try to run SFC? Are they any accounts on this computer?
Did you try running MBAM in Safe Mode?

descriptionDownloaded Application.........Many windows popped open EmptyRe: Downloaded Application.........Many windows popped open

OK I finally was able to scan MBAM in safe mode. It detected 31 infections. Now when I start up again my McAfee detects Trojans and has me shut down so it can be fixed. This is the third time this has happened. I will try and get the logs for the MBAM and the Command Prompt SFC /scannow over to you tomorrow when I can spend more time working on this issue. Thanks for your help and goodnight!

Tried to run MBAM in safe mode and when finished setting up it gave me a error message saying: Unable to execute file.

Now my anti virus does not allow me to turn back on and the log for the CBS is so long, I will have to send it in different sections.

Most of the time Vista has a Recovery on a separate part of your harddrive usually the D drive. Do you have that?

descriptionDownloaded Application.........Many windows popped open EmptyRe: Downloaded Application.........Many windows popped open

I do not have a D drive. I just scanned with my McAfee Total Protection 2014 again and had 213 trojans with 175 fixed. My issues now are:
1.) McAfee Virus and Spyware Protection is off and it does not allow me to turn it back on.
2.) MBAM gives me a message: Windows cannot find C:\ProgramFiles\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again.
3.) Still have Trojans that need to be fixed.
4.) CBS log states Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
5.) ESET Scanner: Able to scan in Safemode and the scan is below. Hooray! After this scan it seems the internet is a lot better. I am just concerned with my McAfee AV not working.

When trying to download MSE in English, I received an error message saying: Virus and spyware definitions could not be updated. Error Code: 0x80070422
"The update service can not be started because it's been turned off by the security administrator or because of a problem in the registry data."

I don't see MSE having an option with all versions and all languages... just individual languages like English. Do I run all the languages? I know that sounds crazy, but I am not sure.

I believe there is a problem with some of the OS files but the only we can be sure is to get SFC to run. If you can't run it, you will need to look for a Vista OS disk to repair the files but it must be the same version that's on your computer.

OK. Ran the Sfc /scannow and it came back saying " Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
Tried viewing the details in the log and it does not show up. Will check again.
The one I did 2 days ago shows up, but it is sooo long. If need to see, how can I attach without copy and pasting?

UPDATE: Found the CBS.log for today. When trying to open it gave me an error msg. = ACCESS DENIED. Running a second time to see if it will give me a log.

As suspected, some files are corrupted. You will need the Vista OS disk to repair them. You can borrow a disk but it needs to be the same version that you have on your computer now. Did you try a System Restore to the day before this started?

tried a system restore does not find path and won't allow me in. Where can I get a Vista OS disc or do I have to create one?

You can try to borrow one or you may be able to buy one on Ebay but it must be the same version as what you have on your computer now.I just did a quick search and found this. Since I've never done this I can't attest to the quality of this site.

Well, I clicked on something and then all these pop ups started. So I figured it was something bad, So I scanned the following:
My virus protection does not work on my MCAfee Total Security. Probably doesn't work cause of the trojan I had. Should I wait to get the Vista Home basic iso first or put something on the laptop for protection.

I believe there are some corrupted files in Vista and will need to be repaired before we can do anything else.Once you get the computer working well again, you can install an AV.
