Windows Vista incomplete update and restarts my laptop without warning....

Hi! I hope you can help me! So windows update pops up and says 'restart your computer to finish installing important updates' and a drop down menu that says 'windows can't update important files and services while the system is using them. Make sure to save your files before restarting' So at least once a day, the laptop just shuts down and restarts with no warning. It takes a good 10 or so minutes after restart to 'configure the changes/updates' with always 0% complete. I don;t know if this is a software, malware, spyware or virus issue and I'm not sure what to do with this. I appreciate any help that you can give me!

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Can you please tell me the size of your harddrive and how much free space you have remaining? Click My Computer, right-click the C drive and click Properties

Hi Dave! This has been going on for about 4-6 months now......I have just bared with it......now I'm at the point of losing my mind!!!

To defrag, do I have to back up docs, pics ect before I defrag?

The size of my hard drive 141GB and there is 2.96GB of free space left.

Not necessary. Defraging just organizes things on your drive so it will be easier to find things.

As I suspected, that is your problem. Windows requires at least 15% free space to operate effectively. In your case that would mean at least 21 Gb of free space. You need to work at this right now or soon your computer will crash. You can save important documents such personal files, videos, pictures and music to an external harddrive or DVD's. You should also uninstall programs you no longer need or use. This will also free up some space.

Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
Click Disk Cleanup from there.



Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.



This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)

Okay so I am done running the disk cleanup. So the rest of it is up to me, then. Once I clear some free space, will I have this issue with windows trying to update, configure, and restart my laptop?

That's usually the cause for failure to download updates; there's not enough room for them. If you still can't update, please let me know.
