Merging 2 500GB Hard Disk Drives

Hello, I was wondering if I could get some help with merging both of my hard disk drives on my laptop into 1 partition that would act as 1 hard drive and essential be 1 TB where both hard disk drives are 500GB each. I have looked at doing it through the windows 7 computer managing where you can essential break and form your drive into partitions but Ive had no success and I'm iffy on doing a RAID due to the options and lack of a clear understanding. If you could help me in anyway, it would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get better use out of my computer. The laptop I am using is an ASUS G74S running windows 7 premium.
