more_horiz
Hello,

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit O.S. with 2 GB of ram.

I have an apparent CBS file corruption as indicated by multiple failure to install codes, (80070490) and no way to check with the Microsoft Fixit tool because Powershell fails to install repeatedly. I am no expert, but my research has led me to these conclusions.

to begin, i had at some point multiple virus, malware and firewalls running at the same time regardless of the claim that the installation of the Trend Micro Internet Security download would disable them. i did not turn them on, but i recently found that the MS firewall and Windows Defender were on. i have since disabled them.

I was originally attempting to renew my Trend Micro subscription and it would not install because i did not have Vista SP2 installed yet. This was news to me because i typically shut down and install updates all the time and had not realized that i was missing a crucial service pack. that's when i started to realize i had a problem updating and installing multiple important updates such as the auto-run issue and the SP2.

Right after i disabled the defender and firewall my 1st Trend Micro scan found 35 issues, fixed them, and did not leave me a screen with results. i figured it may have found my issue and solved it, but either it did not, or actual damage was done already. i need help to figure this out, and i cant find any similar tool to the MS Fixit tool that may check for damage or issues and fix them.

I also have been having problems with the computer shutting down completely right in the middle of whatever program while everything seems to be functioning properly. this is a Toshiba laptop but it acts like a desktop power supply failure from overheating. but i can pull my power cord from the side of the computer and it will still run off battery power. this failure acts like there was no battery in there, but there is. It does not appear to be from overheating since i can actually make it do the shutdown by doing certain things, particularly the mem-test in the start-up repair will produce a shut-down failure every time even from a cold start, so I don't think it's actually a heat issue. it also has been shutting down consistently at the very end of burning a disc in the DVD/CD drive. I don't know if this is related, but is very annoying. sometimes it will go for days without a shutdown, sometimes 10 minutes. of course it usually happens at the worst time. otherwise, for the most part the computer runs fairly well with no other problems.

My original post in the o.s. section:

Hello,
I'm having problems with my Toshiba laptop sporting Vista, Trend Micro Internet Security, normally using Firefox or Chrome and 2g of ram. I am renewing my Trend Micro Security and was doing the install when I got an error "installation Stopped" saying to use this software, I need to have the latest service pack for my operating system. For some reason I am not able to install all updates for windows. I just did some today and was successful for four of them but 1 failed. I also saw today that I have a huge list of problems on my monthly trend micro security report. I must have some kind of software issue that I cannot find or resolve and neither can the anti-virus/anti-spyware. The computer has been shutting off for no reason from time to time with no warning, for some time now. the best way to guarantee this will happen is to run the mem-test or run a Trend Micro scan in safe mode and it will shut down for sure. it usually shuts down at the worst time possible like the last few seconds of burning a cd. but sometimes will go a few days without shutting down at all. I have also been getting the blue screen of death intermittently, although it hasn't sent me to the screen recommending repairs for a long time. So i guess the best place to start would be to get the sp2 to install correctly and go from there? Any ideas on how to make that happen? Please help!!!

Thanks!!!

post 2:

And I just realized that i have been running with two firewalls and apparently 2 anti spyware programs. so i just disabled the factory installed windows firewall and windows defender. could this be why my updates are not downloading correctly or why i'm having other problems like the random shut-downs?

My Windows Security Center settings are now at:
Firewall: Not Monitored
Automatic Updating: On
Malware Protection Check settings
virus protection Not Monitored
Spyware and other Malware On
Trend Micro Internet Security reports that it is turned on ON

Does this sound all good?

Hello.
You pasted the custom scan script for OTL, not the actual OTL log, please re-run it and make sure you post the correct log. Smile...

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found here
  • Click Start then copy paste the following command into the search box & hit enter: "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. This will not install in Vista. Just continue scanning, and skip the console install.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
