I thought I'd chime in to say that I have the same issue: Windows Firewall on Windows 7 64-Bit will not start. I, too, have tried most of the suggestions made in this thread and had the same unsuccessful results.

I am now in the process of running the ESET scan. I will let you know how it goes!

Shocking Whoa

Any more issues?

We need to know any other issues that are plaguing your computer. Kindly give a summary so we know how to continue from here.

Many of the things to note for us would be:

  • Slow computer
  • Error messages
  • Fake antivirus alerts or the icon in the system tray
  • svchost.exe running at 100%
  • System crashes or blue screen of death

DMJ,
Should that take care of the virus issue?
If not tell me what else you need me to do.
If so could you tell me with the info presented if there is any P2P's that I need to remove,and updates that need to be done, there used to be a list of links (JAVA, JAVAra, Windows(a nobrainer) and Adobe) but it seems to have been moved. Other than that are there any other things I should do to harden this computer against malware,viruses ect in the future?

Thanks again the GeekPolice are the Best!
Rob

Okay, let's clean up and take a look here for updates. What we can also do is get you a firewall which will be better than Windows Firewall, and that should help out a lot.

Clean up System Restore

Now, to get you off to a clean start, we will be creating a new Restore Point, then clearing the old ones to make sure you do not get reinfected, in case you need to "restore back."
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Run OTC to remove our tools

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created, please do the following:
Please download OTC.exe by OldTimer:
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

Purge old temporary files

Please download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start
    button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp
    files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute
    or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Security Check

Please download Security Check by screen317 from SpywareInfoforum.org or Changelog.fr.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

My ESTE scan took less than an hour. Only 2 items were found/fixed:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Server\hlp.dat Win32/Bamital.DZ trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Server\sphlp.dll Win32/Bamital.ET trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined

Unfortunately, I still cannot run the Firewall. I have also tried restoring from old System Restore points, as far back as a couple of months. Every single attempt fails with a message stating that the 'Registry could not be restored'.

I believe I have a truly gorked up installation. In my case I think a re-install is in order. Good luck to the rest of you!

DMJ,

Here is the Sercurity Check Checkup.txt Log:

Anti-malware/Other Utilities Check:

Process Check:

Tall Emu Online Armor OAcat.exe
Tall Emu Online Armor oasrv.exe
Tall Emu Online Armor oaui.exe
Tall Emu Online Armor OAhlp.exe
windows defender MpCmdRun.exe
Online Armor OAreg.exe
Alwil Software Avast5 AvastSvc.exe
``````````End of Log````````````
Once again on her Machine she is running MalwareBytes AntiMalware, Avast AntiVirus, Spybot Search & Destroy, and I have added Online Armor as her firewall (unless you have a better preference).
If you see any P2P's please let me know so I can delete them and instruct her as to why they are not a good thing.
One other question what are those three alternate Data Streams and are they something I should be concerned about?
Thanks again,
Rob
DMJ,
One other thing off-topic (sorry) I have applied to the GeekPolice Academy what is the normal amount of time before a notice of acceptance?
Rob
Tall Emu Online Armor is very good. At this point I do not see any P2P software running.
The three alternate data streams listed are not malicious.
Otherwise, everything else appears to be fine.
As for the GeekPolice Academy application, we do not tell anyone if they are declined, due to how many apps we get. However, I usually add them between three and five days, depending on whether we can accept anymore right now or not.
