Having problems posting whole .txt files. Trying to figure out why... did get OTL run... but having posting problems.

As topic: Malware Bytes didn't fix MS Removal Tool infection.
Ran fast scan at least 4 times and deep at least 2

Ran Emsisoft, Spybot and Ad-Aware 8 hours ago. Spybot found something but didn't kill anything. Found a google stating Spyware Doctor and Malwarebytes was the solution, SpyDR didn't even run let alone update. I couldn't get the initial Malwarebytes to update either, but luckily its post had the download for something that is 10 days old. (still can't update though)

Just to make you dislike me more, even though I did read the README post, Java SE 6 Update 24 doesn't update, I click the accept terms and no pop up happens. Not in safe or normal mode. Thus I can't update JavaRa either.

I have Adobe Reader 9.1.2 which doesn't want to uninstall in normal mode. (posting this in safemode with networking as it is)

Posts are broken up because of a rather concerning issue!
"windows" and "update" can't be 1 word!!! How do I get around that?

In Extras.txt it happened 3 times:
Description = Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at:

Error - 24/02/2011 2:23:14 PM | Computer Name = BRIMESTONE | Source = crypt32 | ID = 131083
Description = Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at:

Error - 01/05/2011 1:39:23 AM | Computer Name = BRIMESTONE | Source = crypt32 | ID = 131080
Description = Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number
from:
with error: The server name or address could not be resolved

In OTL it happened... where I divided the posts. ("snipped" posts are where I tried to break it apart to see why things weren't posting, and discovered the issue! And twice in post 5.

Sorry for all the posts and edits.

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.22.3 log created on 05012011_231435

Now what? Restart and test if it's clean? I've been keeping my computer on and in SafeMode with Networking ever since my first posts (but physically unplugged from the internet/my USB cord)
hrm.. while editing this post to ask about restarting, a second tab popped up in Firefox, I closed it before it loaded. Don't think it was one of geekpolices advertisements, as it was for something about "government housing" in the very long url.

Update: Nope. Still have MS Removal Tool on my machine. Even after restart Sad tearing
And when I checked if there was a reply first thing this morning -again in safe mode with networking- a new tab popped open in my firefox that was to an ad page. (Dentistry this time. This was from google straight to this thread that was booked marked, no possible misclicks)

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

MS removal tool - Malwarebytes doesn't fix (also forum posting issues) CF_download_FF

MS removal tool - Malwarebytes doesn't fix (also forum posting issues) CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

MS removal tool - Malwarebytes doesn't fix (also forum posting issues) Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

MS removal tool - Malwarebytes doesn't fix (also forum posting issues) Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Frustration!

The short version is:
I started up in Safe Mode with Networking, downloaded Combo-Fix, did it all as told, and then when it went to download Recovery Console, it said "THERE WAS NO INTERNET CONNECTION". Nothing was touched or changed from the 1 minute prior to Combo-Fix being downloaded.

I can confirm that MS Removal Tool is still on this machine.

Also, when trying to disable AD-AWARE AD-WATCH, the check blocks on
#Registry Protection
# Network Protection
Were not uncheckable!

Combo-Fix ran regardless, even when I tried to X it to want to post here about Ad-Aware.
It then rebooted twice... but went into normal mode, not safe mode because I left the computer semi unattended since I didn't know when restarts would occur.

Log is likely useless due to lack of Recovery Console, but:

Hello.
Please download this file from Microsoft.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=15491F07-99F7-4A2D-983D-81C2137FF464&displaylang=en

Next, please drop/drop it onto Combofix, and Combofix will install the recovery console.

Once that is done, Combofix will ask if you want to continue to scan. Select no, and then let me know once you have gotten this far.

Drag and drop done. Blue Progress Bar showed up.
Nothing was asked by Combo-Fix.

Edit: Posted too soon! Combo-Fix closed Firefox and activated. It is currently saying Ad-Watch Live! Anti-Virus is running. Going to quickly recheck about disabling that again.
Edit 2: And does it matter if I'm running in Safe Mode or not? (safe mode doesn't have the MS removal tool pop up)

Edit 3: Proof I can't uncheck all of Ad-Aware. Second pic shows this. Should I kill it with Task Manager? Would that even work?

New menu where? In Combo-Fix?

It just runs in a command prompt as before; it then as before complained about Ad-Aware being on (which I can't turn off as shown in above photos)

AND as before, it popped up saying Recovery Console not on machine or needs updating. Pic as proof:

And as I was writing this post, 2 things happened:

*New tab with an add popped up (as before), dispite being in safe mode

*got an error pop up:

Hello.
There is no internet connection in Safe Mode, unless you boot to Safe Mode with Networking, I assume your in normal Safe Mode there? if so, reboot and go to the networking option and run Combofix again. With networking, it can download the Recovery Console.

I've always been running in "Safe Mode with Networking", I notice now that I did not say that in Post 11 and 13, but I did make it a point to say it in 7 and 9. Every single one of my posts has been created while in Safe Mode With Networking,
I downloaded OLT in that and Combo-Fix in it. A minute after dl'ing C-F, I ran it and it said no internet connection existed.

I just reboot my machine now, am in Safe Mode with Networking to make this post and will close the browser and run Combo Fix. Then post any results.

Short version: It still did not update.

Step by step version of what happened:
Closed Firefox after post was submitted.
Ran Combo-Fix, and it did its normal Backup Registry (Red & Blue load bars)
Command Prompt window said "Connecting to download.microsoft..." something. (didn't catch it all)
>Pop up saying download failed. No reason was given, so I'd think the internet connection was working, since last time it specifically said it wasn't.
>>Tried to load browser to post that as this time, but it failed to connect while Combo-Fix was running. (Also, yes, I renamed ComboFix to Combo-Fix upon download, thus my calling it "Combo-Fix")
Command Prompt said Root Kit Detected.
Pop up said Root Kit Detected and said to reboot. (I stayed at the computer and made it boot in Safe Mode with Networking (I'm in that session now as I post this)
After rebooting into Safe Mode with Networking, the red & blue load bars showed again and Combo-Fix finished running and made a log.

Loaded Firefox and started making this post.
Log in Spoilers if you need it, I'd guess not though:

I then finished this post and you are reading it now.

Sorry, missed your post.
My XP disk is at my parents' place, I brought it there with a load of other cds and disks a while ago when I was doing some form of simple computer fixing for their computer months ago.
I should be able to get it back and have it in my hands as of 3 hours as of this post's time stamp.

Edit: Will we have to reformat my machine? I'm not overly opposed to having to do that, all that would be lost would be some game saves, which are easily transferable via email. But I'm half expecting to hear you say "reformat won't work since MS Removal Tool wrote itself into the boot sector and bypasses that."

Nope, format is the last thing we resort to here, I'll keep going till I find something that works.

Please download TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool
  • Click the Start Scan button
  • After the scan has finished, click the Close button
  • Click the Report button and copy/paste the contents of it into your next reply
Note:It will also create a log in the C:\ directory.

Ran it.
Said something about finding a Root Kit.
Asked to reboot to clean it.
Rebooted back into SafeMode with Networking.
During reboot MS Removal Tool's boot up pop up (which is red and yellow) did not pop up!

TDDSKILLER did not auto pop up, so I ran a scan with it again and it came up clean (That thing scans fast!)
Then got it's report. Spoilered for length.
Will reboot into normal mode to see if it's gone there too. (aka no blue background and no MS Removal Tool background)

Odd thing to note:
When I restarted to Safe Mode with Networking the first time to run Combo-Fix, after clicking Combo-Fix, a strange pop up flashed briefly. It said something like "Incompatible OS..." couldn't read it all because it disappeared too fast. Combo-Fix then would not load up. I then restart twice (missed F8 the first time) and went back into Safe Mode with Networking and Combo-Fix ran fine with no restarting of the machine. It still could not download Recovery Console.

TDSSKILLER found and killed the rootkit.

The last few days, everything went fine. Tonight though, firefox asked to update to 4.0, shortly after I did, I got something that looked like MS Removal Tool... called something like Malware Protector. It closed Task Manager as soon as it opened (didn't stop it, but closed it fast), it wouldn't let firefox open but on start up there was no DOS like advertisement like with MS Removal. I rebooted into safe mode with networking, TDSSKILLER found nothing, but Combo-Fix found and killed something called Defender.exe and I don't seem to have any problems at all. I do have the C-F log, I'll post that as well, just in case.

Hello.
One more fix to do, just something I want to be sure of.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
    "25565:TCP"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Logan\My Documents\Downloads\Minecraft.exe"=-

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

I see that you are running FrostWire.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    Adobe Reader 9.1.2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 22
    FrostWire 4.20.7

Updating Java:

You should update the instructions to Updating Java a bit.

Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 25.
Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
On the new page, check the "agree" box.
After you have agreed, find (you press Ctrl+F and paste) jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe, across from Windows x86 Offline
Click it to download it.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Finally got around to [and figuring out that the instructions needed updating for] updating Java tonight, as I started a new job 2 weeks ago. Since nothing was updated, in the past 2 weeks, I got attacked by a similar virus, Malware Protection. I may have mentioned it before, I forget. It blocks all internet access unless in SafeMode with Networking with a task bar pop up saying W32/Blaster.worm. (However the last time it still popped up in Safe Mode), however Combo-Fix was able to kill it ever time by deleting defender.exe. (however the last time I tried, Combo-Fix had deleted itself saying it was out of date, so I had to re-download it form this thread while in Safe Mode With Networking).

Other than those 3 specific attacks, I have not had any other issues. All 3 attacks seemed to happen late at night [between midnight and 3am Atlantic time] while I had a DragonAge wikia page open. Not sure if it's the site or just the time. The first attack was from a movie streaming site heavily-laden with ads and such.
