Internet is slower than my friends but same internet

Hi there,

I don't know if its my computer or something but my download speed compared to my friends speed is more than half of his speed!
It's been like this for sometime but it has come to a point where i do mind the difference. Could my ISP be limiting the bandwidth in my line?
Or is it that my friend has a "better" DSL line? By the way we are both using DSL and i got DSL longer than he has. Also i just purchased a new modem
to see if its my age old modem thats causing me this problem but it seems to not be the culprit of this insanity.

With DSL, your connect speed can vary due to the condition of the copper wires and the distance from the CO (Central Office). Bad wires and longer distance will get you lower speeds.

So if i change the ethernet cable i have now which is long as hell, it might change my down speed? Also by Central Office do you mean the box where the areas DSL lines go to? If so i think i live right across the street from it. XD

Changing the Ethernet cable won't have any effect unless the installed cable is bad. I assume the cable is less than 100 feet long.

The Central Office is where the the DSL modem connects to. You may live across from the telephone company, but that doesn't guarantee that it's that building your DLS modem connects to. I may or may not be.

If the CP is across the street, then you should have a faster connection than someone who lives further away. However, this assumes that your copper wires from the DSL modem to the CO are on good shape.

I have a friend who has no-so-good wires running between their DSL modem and the CO. There's nothing you can do about that because most ot the wiring belongs to the phone company. Anyway, back to my friend with the bad wiring. Her Internet speed is fine until it rains. Then it slows down.

So there's absolutely nothing i can do anything on my end? Is it possible if i call my ISP to replace the copper wires for new ones?

There's really nothing you can do on your end other than to make sure your wiring is good.

I would definately your ISP and complain. I doubt they will do anything, especially if there is fiber in your area.

If you have another ISP in your area, check with them to see what they have to offer.

You can check your computer ram speed. And when your internet is slow you can check your internet speed on here. ip-details.com It's doing good for internet speed test.

So i've done several speed tests and it said my download and upload speed is perfectly fine, but the problem still persists. Says i have the download speed of 2.96 mbps and .73 mbps. If the line is bad, theres no way it can give a download speed of 2.96 mbps can it?

Thanks Kenny for the suggestion but it did not work. My download rate isn't hitting over 300 kbps. I really don't want to cancel my DSL connection since i don't need the overwhelming bandwidth of fiber optics. Any other suggestions is greatly appreciated and of course thanks to all of those that contributed.
