Data Recovery after Hard Drive Cleaned

I hope someone can help me with this. My computer crashed a couple of days ago and all programs and drivers had to bee reinstalled. My hard drive and computer were wiped clean. We had tons of pictures on kodak easyshare and these were not backed up. Is there any possible way to retrieve them ? These were pictures om my grand child and family gatherings. I am not a computer expert and am hoping it is a possibility. I don't care about the cost as much as the value of these family pictures. I here from time to time where they confiscate criminals computers and are able to retrieve infomation from the hard drive even after it has been erased. Is this a possibility for me ?
