Hard Drive Not Detected - Possible Virus?

Hello,

I have a Windows Vista OS and a Philips USB 2.0 portable disk external harddrive that is not being detected at all on my computer. It was working fine and then it just stopped. My computer has been acting strange, so I believe that I have a virus, which I have attempted to take care of, but it could have infected my external.

Can someone help me out?
