hello again GeekPolice! its been a couple years since i've needed your help, but i've sent u many new fans in the meantime.

i have a conundrum in my old Dell Dimension 3000, running Windows XP, Home Edition, SP3, 32bit, with DSL 100mbp connection. (although that is a lie - it never really is that fast!)

a few weeks ago, i started getting a couple of hit warnings with my antivirus program, Avast!, telling me it had stopped a whatever at whatever site i was on. i don't surf around to dangerous sites, and this was a weather site. curious, but no biggee. my Avast! freebie was set to expire last month. IMO some antivirus programs, like McAfee, do that and is usually a normal thing with freeware when it is about to expire, in order to scare folks into purchasing an upgrade. however, i know that there are more freebies out there... ;)

anyhoo, the last Windows Update i got was the 13July security update. i didn't get the end of the month's other updates. instead, sometimes in my Task Manager the program "wuauclt.exe" would be running huge chunks of CPU and File Pages making my machine come to a crawl until i turned it off. AND, when i would go to the Windows Update site to have them scan my computer for the latest updates, the wuauclt would sometimes run for hours until the WU site gave me an error msg that it couldn't do it. the error msgs varied, and even googling wuauclt.exe on Microsoft or other places showed that there was plenty of other folks having that problem, but no solution from Microsoft except "go to automatic updates and download the latests" which was b/s, because if wuauclt.exe won't let them see what the latest is, then its a worthless fix.

i uninstalled Avast! and even re-downloaded and re-installed IE8, with all its newest updates, and let it run itself while bareback on the internet. (no protection) the wuauclt.exe STILL wouldn't let WU look in my computer and just ate up my CPU. i even tried deleting all the wuauclt files found on my computer to no avail - they reproduce themselves which means they are coming from something else.

i went ahead and downloaded and installed the latest Avira Antivir Personal freebie, and after a complete scan, it did find one Trojan and quarantined it. they called it "TR/Agent.3261.A Trojan" so i thought the bugger had been finally gotten rid of. it hadn't.

i still can't get Windows Update to update my computer, even though yesterday was the monthly security update, because wuauclt.exe is blocking them. i know that Microsoft says it is a legitimate program, but it isn't, and they won't admit they have a problem.

has anybody else run into wuauclt.exe problems? or can't get Windows Update?

fyi, i have automatic updates set to inform me first before downloading or installing. thanks!

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Guess we need to dig a little deeper.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

wuauclt.exe is blocking Windows Update from updating CF_download_FF

wuauclt.exe is blocking Windows Update from updating CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

wuauclt.exe is blocking Windows Update from updating Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

wuauclt.exe is blocking Windows Update from updating Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Belahzur,
yes indeed. apparently i do have a nasty little bug. it "recognized" the download from ComboFix from both download sites and gave me a prompt that i can't rename it "ComboFix[1]"

i took a couple screenshots to show u. its a jpg, so how do i attach it?

the prompt just pops up and says:

"You cannot rename ComboFix as ComboFix[1]
Please use another name, preferably made up of alphanumeric characters."

Belahzur,
thanks for your help! the ESET Online Scanner didn't find anything. ("0 found") so i will only post the result txt of the scan if u insist.

HOWEVER, i did hear back from Microsoft. although they aren't gonna admit it yet, but it seems they think it is a Windows problem. here are the steps their IT customer rep wants me to do. i will go ahead and do this, and let u know if that fixes it.

Q: if it is malware, we would've found it by now right? but if it is a MS problem, it would be affecting a whole bunch of folks right? so, i'm confused...

anyhoo, here is what he wants me to do, and i will do it today: (fyi, i don't use a proxy)

Step 1: Rename the CatRoot2 folder

==========================

1. Click "Start", "Run", type: "notepad C:\remove.bat" (without quotations) and press Enter. Choose "Yes" when you are prompted.

2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window.

net stop CryptSvc

ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start CryptSvc

3. After you paste the above commands, please close the "Notepad" window. Choose "Yes" when you are prompted to save the file.

4. Click "Start", "Run", type: "C:\remove.bat" (without quotations) and press "Enter" to run the commands that were pasted.

Step 2: Re-register the system files

Step 3: Reset Proxy (LAN)

===========================

These steps will help us clear the proxy settings, and enable the computer to connect to the Internet directly for troubleshooting. If your computer can only connect to the Internet through certain proxy, please ignore the steps below, and let me know. In that situation, the cause may be a proxy provider who blocks access to Windows Update, and I strongly recommend contacting the proxy provider.

Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list and then clear the proxy cache.

1. Open "Internet Explorer".

2. Under "Tools", select "Internet Options".

3. Click on the "Connections" tab.

4. Click "LAN Settings".

5. In the proxy settings area, please click the "Advanced" button, and delete any entry in the "Exceptions" section.

6. Click "OK", and return to the previous window. Clear the proxy server address, and uncheck the option "Use a proxy server for this connection".

7. Quit "Internet Explorer".

Next, clear your proxy cache.

1. Click "Start", and then click "Run".

2. Type "cmd" in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.

3. Type "proxycfg -d" at the command prompt, and press "Enter".

4. Type "net stop wuauserv" at the command prompt, and press "Enter".

5. Type "net start wuauserv" at the command prompt, and press "Enter".

Note: For troubleshooting purposes only, if you use a router to access the Internet, please remove the router and connect the computer directly to the Internet. This issue can be caused by incorrect router configurations and by removing the router it eliminates any possible configuration issues on the router itself.

After that, please check if the computer can be updated properly. Thank you for your cooperation. If the issue still persists, please help gather the following information for my further research:

If there are any error code or error messages, please follow the following steps to take a screenshot:

Hello.
If it an MS problem from MS updates, it would only effect those who got the update, those who didn't, obviously didn't get the problem.

After performing that, did it help any?

Belahzur,
here is a clue that he told me to do last week, and it worked long enough to go to the Windows Update webpage and get the latest downloads, then it went back to being stuck on wuauclt.exe.

here is what he had me do. remember, it only worked for a little while, then whatever had corrupted that folder, corrupted it again. i ran anti-malware software on that particular folder, and nothing was found.

anyhoo, here is what he said do:

Step 2: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder
==================================
One possible cause is that Windows Update's temporary folder contains corrupted files. This step will clean its "Download", which contains the Windows Update downloaded update installation files. After renaming this folder, all the files will be automatically recreated, except the Windows Update History data and downloaded updates' installation files. This will have no negative effect on your computer's performance.

1. Click "Start", "Run", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter". In the command window, type "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter".

2. Click "Start", "Run", type: "%windir%" (without quotations) and press "Enter".

3. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder and choose "Rename", type SDOLD as the new name.

4. Click "Start", "Run", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter". In the command window, type "net start WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter".

Note: This folder will be created automatically after starting Automatic Updates service. Only Windows Update history will be lost. To check which update is necessary, I suggest we check updates on update website.

Please test the issue again via the Windows Update website and let me know the result. If it persists, please assist me in collecting the following information.
