Yesterday afternoon, I got hit with something...Vista tells me it was Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A BUT since I'm getting a phony prompt for a spyware program, I'm not sure if what windows is telling me is valid, or part of the misleading pop-ups that are associated with this type of virus.

In normal mode, I can't download anything. I can't run task manager. I can't run command prompt, to get to regedit. I can run IE, which is normally fine because I use firefox, but most online virus scan and removal tools require IE. All actions give me the same error, telling me I have corrupted EXE's, after they have crashed and/or closed.

Last night, I tried finding an online virus scan and removal tool that worked with Firefox. All I found were dead ends. The one that looked promising crashed before it could finish and then wouldn't let me restart the download. Then I realized that windows was telling me, that it gave me the name of the viruses.

This morning, I looked up Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A and tried to use the posted removal tools, only to find the files I was instructed to delete aren't showing up in windows explorer or regedit...I've rebooted in safe mode with networking. I've done a number of searches and my "symptoms" match those of others; corrupted EXEs, porn and viagra pop-ups, spyware pop-ups, etc. But the manual removal tools haven't helped, because I cannot find the entries the instructions say to delete.

So, I'm at a loss on how to proceed. Because those files aren't showing up on my system, now I'm not 100% that the trojan has been identified correctly, and since I cannot run anything, I can't use a virus program to identify the issue conclusively.

Per your posting instructions, we're instructed to download something to create a file to post, to enable you to help us...like I said, I can't download anything. However, I'm on another machine to post this so I do have the resource of being able to get online and do research while my infected machine sits.

So, is it possible that I have a different virus that looks like Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A because the pop-up identifiers is part of the attack? If that's the case, what is the "real" virus called?

Do you have any ideas for me on how to manually get rid of this junk?

'Bella

PS. I'm sorry this is so disorganized. I have a headache, naturally, and am a bit frustrated.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

I would love to make this easy but I can't and I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, which is why I'm asking for help.

Maybe you missed it the first time, but I did read your instructions before posting. I stated the following in my first post:

"Per your posting instructions, we're instructed to download something to create a file to post, to enable you to help us...like I said, I can't download anything."

Anything I try to open/install gives me a corrpupt exe message, or just crashes and closes in exchange for another faux anti-spyware program prompt, or porn and viagra pop-up.

What I am looking for here is a way to concretely identify the virus/trojan/etc, and manual removal instructions to clean this up myself, as IE has been damaged by the infection. I really don't want to have to wipe my hard drive and reinstall.

Any other suggetions?

Hello.

We need to use the RKill Tool by Grinler

Rkill.com <--- Download site

  • Please Download Rkill.com. Save it to your Desktop.
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.

  • NOTE: If you are unable to connect to the site to download rkill, then you should download it to a clean computer and copy it to the infected one via a USB flash drive or CDROM.

  • Once it is downloaded, double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Rogue programs.
  • Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them.
  • When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step.
NOTE: If you get a message that rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by the rogue program, when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close Rkill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate the rogue program. So, please try running Rkill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the steps.

If you continue having problems running rkill.com, you can download:
iExplore.exe or eXplorer.exe
which are renamed copies of rkill.com, and try them instead.

Try running OTL now.

Okay...now I'm confused, completely confused. Are you actually READING my messages?

I told you in the first post that I could not download anything, that if I tried to open something, I get a corrupted exe message and the thing crashes. I also told you that I read your posting instructions and couldn't run that program.

Your first reponse was telling me to download the very thing I said I couldn't.

In my second post, I reitterated the issue, explaining again that I cannot install anything onto this machine.

Your second response was telling me to download something else.

Again, I'm going to tell you this: the infection kills anything I try to open.

I stumbled across this site per someone's recommendation, saying that you were the best at helping with this sort of thing. I wouldn't be here asking for help if I didn't need it. I don't mean to sound snotty or ungrateful for potential help but you are sooooo not helping.

So, let me rephrase my initial question. Perhaps that will give us a starting point.

My computer says I have Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A and from everything I have found online, the symptoms match identically to others who have posted saying they have the same virus issues. But, when I tried to manual removal instructions, from 4 different sites, I couldn't the items I was instructed to remove. So, my question is, what virus makes Vista "think" you have Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A, or is the computer probably correct in identifying the attack?

There are tons of posts here with Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A in the heading, so I'm figuring, someone here might know if it's an intential red herring developed by the person or persons who designed the viruses. (I didn't post in those because the posting instructions said not to post in someone else's thread but to start a new one.)

IF I have THAT combination of viruses, several to every value should be there for me to find and remove.

IF the virus sends a phoney signal, to get Vista to give a wrong diagnosis, people are still going to think that is what they have and post the symptoms with that associated virus name...that's the whole point. And if that's the case, what is the "real" virus?

I realize that what I'm asking may seem like I'm asking for the moon and giving you nothing to get there with but I'm willing to do the work on this. I just need to be pointed in the right direction, since the removal instructions for Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A got me nowhere.

Please, thank you, and thanks.

Hello.
Okay, if the internet access is completely cut for now, do you have another machine we can use. and external hardware so we can transfer programs across?

I am on a borrowed machine...and can put something to disc or compact flash to transfer it BUT then what?? Anything I try to open/install/etc gives me a corrupt exe message. Let me explain my symptoms once again.

On the infected machine, I am able to get online using Firefox, which seems to be the only acception. For example, IE wont load, task manager wont load, anti-virus online scans wont load after download, etc. Everything crashes with an exe failure, where I'm told the corresponding EXE has been corrupted with a virus. In the meantime, I get hit with porn, viagra and phoney anti-spyware pop-ups (that want me to pay to get rid of this infection-ha!). The IE pop-ups and dialogue pop-ups refuse to close and since I cant use task manager, it's ugly.

And as long as the download doesn't take longer than the interval of the trojan, I might be able to download something small. But, what good would it do any of us if I can't open it or install it to run it??

In case you're curious, here is a couple things I found....

Your recommendation after helping someone with this same virus combo:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090129114518AApjCon

A description someone else's troubles (identical to what's happening with my machine) with manual removal instructions:
http://hands-oncorp.com/2010/02/22/banker-fox-a-removal-instructions/

I tried to find the values in the removal instructions but none of them were present on my machine.

I tried other manual removal instructions but again, the values weren't on my machine. Everything matches up (the name of the virus, the description of symptoms, etc), but what doesn't match is what is on the list for manual removal.

So, since I can't "add" anything to my infected computer, what do I do?

After the scan, delete and quarantine, I was instructed to reboot. The computer seemed to lock up somewhere along the way, before my desktop appeared on my screen. It sat frozen, for at least a full minute.

Yahoo messenger is still dead. I can reinstall that...no biggie.

IE will open now (no longer crashes on the load), but it tells me no matter what I put in the address bar that the address is invalid, or it's unable to connect. Strange.

Firefox still works, and always has, but in order to do any other online virus scans or microsoft updates later, I'll need IE to work.

I haven't looked for other problems, and I'm not blaming you or the programs you had me use...don't get me wrong. I'm just looking for suggestions on how to work the kinks back out with IE, and see if you have an ideas on how to get the boot up process to go smoothly like it should.

Thanks so much. Smile...

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to svchost as follows:

Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A? CF_download_FF

Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A? 2aflf5z

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on svchost.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Sorry for the delay in my response...I've been sick.

I ran the combo fix, then nothing would load, giving me an invalid exe message. Once I rebooted, it worked and everything seemed fine. I kept a copy of the last log. Do you want to see it?

Meanwhile, I think I may need to run a malware/virus scan again. Should I start from the beginning in running these?

Hello.

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Code:

    DDS::
    uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
    uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride =

    RegLock::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\AllUserSettings]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001\AllUserSettings]

  4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

    Win32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A? Cfscriptb4i

  5. Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  7. Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

I wasn't able to drag and drop that in. The combofix closed and deleted itself and I had to redownload it. I ran the full scan again. Then, I tried to post the log and it wouldn't fit. Even half was too big.

This computer is behaving a little strangely...quite frequently, my browser goes crazy and tries to refresh itself every three seconds. I have to close it and open a new one. Is that a virus remnant?

Should I start this whole clean up process over again?

'Bella
