I have read your rules, and respectfully request your assistance to solve my issue. The other day I downloaded a free movie on project free tv. Then a whole lot of pops ups flooded my screen, and a warning popped up in the lower right hand corner of my screen. It said that a bankerfox.a virus was trying to attack my computer, do I want to block it. I turned off my entire compter by pulling the plug. I didn't shut down, I just turned it off. I have Avast free anti-virus, and I know what that warning looks like, and I have been a member of myspace and facebook long enough to know not to click on those things. But, now, it won't go away. It keeps popping up along with a request to activate my antivirus now. My antivirus is activated. I did a full scan at boot-up and avast found nothing. But apparently there is something because I had to go into safe mode with networking to even be able to download highjackthis. And the message pops up over and over again. I can USUALLY find my way around the computer pretty well, lol. But, I feel like a complete retard because I don't know how to get rid of this, short of just completely reinstalling the OS. I don't want to do that, and system restore is not working. Thank you so much for your help ahead of time.

Sincerely,
Kristina Barker

First I want to thank you for taking the time to get back to me so quickly. I really appreciate your help.

Second, I did exactly as you said, but highjackthis said that some files were blocked, and that if the malware is in those files I have to do a manual something or other. And I ran the scan anyhow, and checked all the boxes you said to check, but this one:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cdximvbc] C:\Users\Kristina\AppData\Local\egkofcchg\lkfcoshtssd.exe

was not on the list. I hit fix checked, ran the malwarebytes software you recommended, did a quick scan, removed all 7 of the infections found.

Is there something else I should do. Did I do everything right? Thank you again for your help. -Kristina

Thank You!

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Hello.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

Please run OTL.exe.

  • Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :OTL

actually, after that last thing you made me do, my computer seems to be back to normal. It is working fine, there are no more pop up warnings, no more blocking me from the internet, none of that. Is that last step absoƖute necessary? I only ask because I hesitate to mess with my internet options, as the last time I did, I had to call my provider because I could not get online, and he made me go through a whole lot of steps just to get back online. I need my internet to work because I work from home. So, if you truly believe that this last step is necessary, I will do it. But if not, then can I skip it? Thank you so much!

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
Double click OTL.exe.

  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
