Computer keeps freezing

Hi, please help if you can!

My computer recently had 'Antivirus Soft' and I successfully removed it at the time. Then it came back yesterday out of nowhere. I ran malwarebytes in safe mode and it seemed to have detected it and removed it again. But now ever since I got rid of it the second time(?), my computer is acting terrible. It will act fine for 5 minutes and then completely freeze on me. Especially when browsing the internet. It's extremely frustrating and I have no idea why it's doing this. Any ideas? I've done scans and they all say I'm fine (except my AVG scan froze in the middle one time).

P.S., I haven't been able to update malwarebytes since 2/13. It keeps giving me an error.

EDIT: Also, my windows start up tone is also delayed after rebooting like the few topics below me.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

In Internet Explorer

1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.
   

In Firefox

1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
   
2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.
   

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

K, I did as you said. But as I was scanning in normal mode with Malwarebytes, my computer froze again.

So I did the quick scan in safe mode. Here's the log:

I'm nervous my computer will still freeze up.

EDIT: It froze again shortly after I made this post I don't get it...I have a feeling it could be a hardware issue? Earlier today when I tried to readjust my screen on my laptop the computer made a weird fan noise and froze also.

But other than the freezes, my computer works normally like always. Why does it keep freezing on me?

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

• Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  
• Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  
• It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  
• You may need to use two posts to get it all.
  

Here's the otl.txt file. I don't know if I can get the extras.txt file though. My computer froze after the scan and when I restarted, all I saw was the otl.txt file saved on my desktop.

EDIT: I was just able to run the scan before my comp froze but no extras.txt file popped up? Just the otl.txt file again.

EDIT: Hey, so it's been a little over an hour since I posted that log and my computer hasn't frozen once! (Don't wanna jinx anything lol). It's running really smooth too Just wanted to give you a little update.

Okay, do one last thing for me.

No, I couldn't find anything. I even did a folder search but nothing came up. Is that good? Or is that a clue for me to thank you (an assistant) for helping me? lol. which I want to thank you for!! You have been so helpful past few days. You represent the opposite side of the evil malware creating assholes.

I did notice that a lot of folders and files are like faded out though. Meaning they aren't accessible. Does that matter? And should I delete all the programs we used? My desktop is filled with them haha. Although I may keep them around just in case.

No, the infection creates a new user account on your OS and we have to delete it, but it's not there on your machine, so saves us some time here.

The MBR has been cleaned up, there is just dead code leftover - I can't do anything about this, only way to kill that is to wipe the hardrive, and it's not worth the trouble of doing that, especially after we just got this cleaned up too.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /uninstall

This will also reset your restore points.

OK, I uninstalled combofix. Is it OK that AVG was running? It mentioned that as it was uninstalling.

No, it's fine, AVG doesn't tend to be very aggressive, but we disable the AV just in case anyhow.

I see. Is there anything I can do to avoid the damn Antivirus Soft thing again. It's hit me twice out of nowhere and that second time was bad as you can see. Or was it the rootkit that caused my computer to keep freezing? I'm not even sure what a rootkit is.

Yep, the rootkit hiding in the MBR was causing it.

Rootkits use advanced techniques to hide themself, but we have ways of finding them.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen.
