I'm running my father's computer which is XP and I'm pretty hopeless with computers in general. I've been reading up on other forums and what not how they advised others with what appears to be the same problem as mine but you should know that I've only had a frail understanding of everything I've tried to do so far to fix this.

Anyway I seem to have the virus where the "windows security alert" pops up repeatedly creating an entire row of the little red shields with the x in them. The file it keeps telling me is infected is "wscntfy.exe" but it changed to say any other program I try to open is infected and won't let me open it. And a few other fake ones pop up as well. I also have a fake "Antivirus software alert" where it's telling me my computer is being infiltrated and that is a square white box in the corner of my screen. It also keeps opening IE to unpleasant websites and sometimes another big white square antivirus alert shows up in the middle offering to update or "stay unprotected" which is the only button I can click to get rid of it.

I can't open the task manager and I've heard three or four virus alert beepies without being able to see them so I imagine the virus is blocking that as well.

It happened yesterday and I've done so much to this damned machine since then that I have no idea if at any point I accidentally agreed to any of the bubbles. I don't think I did.

Things I've tried:
-Running Aviva and MBAM in safe mode don't work. They pick up nothing and can't be updated. Updating them in regular mode won't work.
-Running Hitman won't work because at the very end after finding things it won't remove them because of some reason I don't understand.
-System Restore won't work, just before the virus blocks the alert I managed to read "System restore won't protect your computer, please restart..." and upon restart it still fails to work.
-AVG didn't work but I forget why, it was nearing the end of my attempts last night.
-Combo fix, Snitfraud, DocFix all failed to really do anything from what I could see but I'm not positive i tried it properly.
-Hijack this won't work either, even after renaming it. Though I haven't yet tried it in safe mode.

I can run things in safe mode but it doesn't pick up anything and when I go into regular mode and try the Alt+F8 to sneak by the virus to get something open it doesn't work and renaming a file doesn't sneak by it either.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.
