Moderators/Ops - first off, thank you for the work you do everyday to help out folks like me.

Here are the particulars of the problem I'm facing:

The issue first manifested itself around 10pm on Sunday 1/3/10 when I was using Google search.
Whenever I do a search in IE or Google chrome (the former is the browser I always use) and then click on a result link, I am redirected to various sites. This happens when using both google and yahoo search. I have not been able to reproduce this issue in Firefox.

The sites I am redirected to include the following: xbstar.com, luckyresults.com, remove-spyware-010-011.com (this one actually tried to install malware but was blocked by SpywareDoctor running on my system), topclick.com, pronto.com, webloft.com, shopzilla.com, uslacrosse.com, gqlife.com etc.

This is just a small sampling of the sites I am redirected to - the list appears to be enormous and there are new sites on practically every search result click.

Most of the time, there is a chain of various sites I am redirected to, usually culminating in a page that looks like some kind of search engine (ex pronto.com). If I restart IE, sometimes the issue begins occuring only on the 2nd or 3rd search. Note that my default IE homepage has not been changed by the malware.

I do not know the type of malware/virus that my system is infected with. I have McAfee Internet Security installed on my system but it did not prevent the infection. I have had McAfee running on my computer for the last 8 months w/ daily scans enabled.

Since the infection occurred, I have tried all of the following with no success:

- A system restore using McAfee to the latest restore point dated around 2pm Sunday 1/3/10 (when this did not work, I did not reverse the restore)
- I deleted my HOSTS file (it had a large # of entries in it, I believe all mapped to 127.0.0.1 and there were comments in the file indicating that the entries were inserted by SpywareDoctor) and created a new HOSTS file with a single entry in it for 127.0.0.1/localhost
- Full McAfee scan
- Full scans with AdAware, SpyWareDoctor, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Microsoft Malicious Software detection tool
- I did everything users are instructed to do in the geekpolice FAQ

Please help me diagnose and fix this issue. I have attached the HijackThis log file as instructed. Let me know if you require any further information.

Once again, your time, help and expertise are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response.

I did what you indicated in both HijackThis and MBAM. I restarted my computer but unfortunately, the issue still exists.

Please let me know what else I should do to fix this issue. Thanks.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Web browser google/yahoo searches redirected to multiple sites CF_download_FF

Web browser google/yahoo searches redirected to multiple sites CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Web browser google/yahoo searches redirected to multiple sites Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

Web browser google/yahoo searches redirected to multiple sites Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
