I have a computer (running windows xp) infected with os guard 2009. I cannot open and use the command prompt. The task manager does not list the infected process as I have seen on some internet searches. Internet explorer will not work. I have Malwarebytes... ran it this morning and had 9 infected files, removed them, re-booted and still have the same issue. Currently running another scan with Malwarebytes and have found 0 infected objects as of right now. Help?

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

I can't get past the os gaurd in the browser window to go to any other website and I've been unable to get online in the safe mode. I'm currently on another computer adjacent to the one with the issue.

Please download Ice Sword from HERE

  1. Download the zip to your desktop and extract it.
  2. Open the Ice Sword folder and then launch IceSword.exe.
  3. Will IceSword open?

  • Now, on the left hand side tool, hit the Process button at the top of the list.
  • Just above the list, there is a log button, press that and save the log to your Desktop.
  • Next, hit the Startup on the left side list.
  • Press the log button again.
  • Post the two logs in your next reply.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

Delete this folder in bold:
C:\Program Files\AskSearch

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
Double click OTL.exe.

  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

While attempting to delete "AskSearch" from the C-Drive I get the following message:

Cannot delete DefaultSearch.dll: Access is denied.
Make sure that the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Just check it's not on the uninstall list. I checked it from your logs and it wasn't showing there, but might actually be there.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

    Ask Toolbar

If not, let me know.

It doesn't show up in the Add or Remove Programs window.

I suggest you copy these instructions into a notepad file, because we need to use safe mode and you won't have internet access to read from here.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

Now try deleting the AskSearch folder again.

Reboot back to normal mode, let me know how it went, if it deleted or not.
