I wish I could, but now my computer won't even turn on properly! It starts up with the screen that says "Your comp wasn't shut down properly, etc." then asks which mode I want to start the computer in.. I tried regular, safe mode, etc. but it won't let me start in any mode. All it does is automatically restart the same process over and over and over again... any insight??

(I'm typing this from my desktop, its my laptop that is on the fritz)

I'm gonna have to check if work has one tomorrow. In the meantime, is there any other way to fix it? I'm even willing to reformat the computer(everything has already been saved, backed up, etc. and don't need anything on it). Thanks!

Well, formatting would fix everything, including the malware issue, but it's your choice on that matter. I was gonna suggest we try a repair install first though.

Reformating isn't possible without a disc, neither is repair install. Only other thing is a factory restore if your machine has that option.

I have my Windows XP disc now, would prefer to do a reformat.

I tried loading the disc onto my laptop, but same issue is happening. Windows logo appears, then takes me to the page that give me options for safe mode, regular mode, etc. Regardless of which option I choose, it shows a quick screen of a bunch of script running, then goes back to the windows logo and the process repeats.

I tried pushing F9, F10, F11, F12, ESC, etc. during the logos boot-up but still no luck.. any ideas??

Okay, insert the Windows disc and reboot the machine.
There should be a point it says "Press any key to boot from cd..."

Hit something, and it launches the CD.

When should I do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS

Unfortunately, the system doesn't even the opportunity to recognize the disk so it can't boot from there. It simply keeps rebooting itself over and over again.

Fine, guess we may have to force it to boot from the disc.
We'll need to go into the BIOS to do this. See here on how to do that, it's hard to describe since every BIOS is different.
