Processor digits

I am rather curious about the numbers in the description of processors. Could someone please enlighten me about the significance of the number 2 in the string 'Intel core 2 duo' ?

There's not much significance behind the names.

Core is the name Intel chose for their newer processor.

Core 2 is the name for the next version of that Core processor.

When you see Duo then that means there are two processors in the same packaged chip.

Thus Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are both two processor chips, one being the newer Core 2 variety.

Same goes for Core 2 Quad and so on.
