I bought a 128 Gb USB Kingston Datatraveler, I am beginning to think that I got a fake. my computer recognize the 128 Gb when I click on Properties. I have already format it low level and FAT 32. But it seems that when I am copying fles in it everything goes fine until I reach around 4 Gb. The rest of the folders I copy are kind of corrupted. I am not sure what is the problem and what to do just to make sure if it's a legit 128 Gb USB. Right now I am running a H2testw program on it. This program is suppossed to check on the real capacity of the usb memory. Is there any other idea to make this work???? Thanks in advance.

Hello

The hard drive is fine,

FAT32 only supports files no bigger than 4GB.

For it to accept anything bigger than 4GB you would have to format the drive as NTFS.

If for some reason you need it formatted in FAT32 , the only real solution is to split the files into <4gb then transfer them like that.

Similarly, you can use exFAT if you have Windows Vista or Windows 7. If you are using XP, you can get a hotfix.

Let me see if I am understanding this, the files I am copying there are smaller than 4 Gb. The total amount of info I want to copy is around 80 Gb. If I format it as FAT32 I will get no more capacity than 4 Gb?

Correct. Format it to NTFS, it is much faster and efficient.

ok, I'll give a try. Is there any software you recommend to format it to NTFS? I don't find the windows options reliable. I will try with HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool, (I think I tried to format it to NTFS before, but there was some error, but I'll do it again), do you know some other software for it??

Ok, I tried to get it to NTFS, but it always send me an error message "Unable to format the device", I'll try it at a Vista computer, and see if it could work

You could convert it like this

1. Click Start > Run > CMD > OK.

2. Type: CONVERT X: /FS:NTFS
Press Enter.

(NOTE: "X" is to be replaced with the drive letter of the HArd Drive)

Hmmmm..... Some flash drives are not compatible with NtFS

maybe that's why it won't do it.

You could always keep FAT32 and transfere your files in sets of <4gb.

It should store more than 4gb, but it can't handle using files over 4gb.
E.g, transfere 80gb , watching a 5gb movie. Etc.

sorry didn't realise it said raw , A 'raw' drive is one that has not been formatted.

It needs to be formatted

ok. I have already format it to fat 32. When all this problem started it was because I have a 750Gb external hard disk with a lot of info. But I don't feel comfortable with it because it needs an electric supply besides the computer usb port. So i bought this 128 Gb usb. I am trying to copy all my music to this usb memory (80 Gb). When I copy an amount of files that is under 4 Gb (none of the files is over 4 gb, if I add the size of all the files it gets close to 4 gb) everything goes just fine, but when I get over the 4 Gb it's when the problems starts. The folders appear, but when I check inside the folders it seems like the files in there are corrupted and when I try to erase them I won't let me.
I aam going over the process again, I format it to FAT 32, I am copying files that will use 3.5 Gb of the total capacity. And I will go from there until I find a problem.

I have been searcching the web and ffound several blogs about it but no solution, I hope we can find it.

Before I go all the way to the copy and shit. I format back to Fat 32, then tried the convert in the cmd screen. It told me to use chkdsk before and now I am converting it to ntfs.

But I still have to double check the 4 gb issue. I'll let you now what goes on.

I got the answer, I am using a counterfeit usb, all the problems match. I bought a 128 Gb usb Datatraveler 101. But Kingston 100 series only gets up to 16 Gb. So I have sent an email to the seller, getting ready to solve this problem.

I want to thank you for your time and attention, is there anyway I can show how much I appreciate your help?

Thanks guys.
