Cannot update Windows, virus? help please

Hi running my laptop with Windows Vista had zonealarm extreme AV & i regualy run SD however recently my windows updates have stopped & it will not allow me to update siting error code 87002EFD. at a loss to know why it has suddenly stopped as i haven't knowingly changed any settings etc... could it be a virus that has infiltrated my system? incidentally windows live messenger no longer works either.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Hi tried to update malware & its siting error code 727 (0,0) uninstalled & reinstalled & the same thing happened. After the scan yesterday (log above) the pc shut down and would not restart kept freezing on setup page??? eventually got it running again by last known good config. what would you advise? thanks

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

In Internet Explorer

1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.
   

In Firefox

1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
   
2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.
   

Can you update MBAM now?

Hi, I removed the java updates as advised. I follwed the instructions regarding proxy settings. neither had he proxy server ticked. tried to update MBAM again to no avail.

Hi i downloaded the anti virus as advised & I followed all instructions that you posted but i still cannot download windows updates????? have you thrown in the towel??!!! is there no further advice/suggestions to over come this problem? Please could you let me know either way as if theres no more you can advise then i'll just have to leave it in with an engineer.

Hi followed above instructions. 2/8 were sucessful (the first & last) the others listed the following errors
2) the module"ShDOCRWDLL" WAS LOADED but the entry point was not found. make sure that "ShDOCRWDLL" is a valid DLL or OCX FILE & try again
3) The module"MSjavaDll" was loaded but the call to Dllregistry server was found with error code 0x80040201
4) The module Actprxy.dll was loaded but the call to Dllregistry server failed error code0x80070005
5) Oleaut32.dll same error code as above
6) Mshtml.dll error same as 2
7) Browseui.dll as error 2 also
