Recently I have caught the Security Center 2009 virus. I cant run any programs whatsoever besides internet explorer. I booted my comp up using a Barts PE to see if I could run some of my anti virus programs, but the only one that worked was spybot S&E. It found a trojan and a couple keyloggers and removed 6 threats total, but when booting up my comp there is no change at all, security center still has control. I noticed that everyone around here uses Hijackthis to start the troubleshooting process, but when I download it security center keeps it from running just like everything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

I can download the file to my desktop, but It still wont run. Are there any known registry files that this virus corrupts or changes? I can mess around with them using barts PE but im not exactly sure what to look for...But thats the only way I can run some programs.

If your confident with the registry, you can go look under the Run key/ or export it and paste what's inside the export back here.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Export them two run keys if you can, and transfer them via any means to a working machine.

Something different happened to today when I turned my PC on. My UI didnt load at all, however i was able to pull up task manager. From there I could run internet explore and browse back to this forum and I was able to run DDs. It said 'Not enough memory to complete the sort.' I was also able to download and run malwarebytes, it updated and began scanning, but the virus killed the program after a few seconds and any further attempts to run it afterwards.

Im going to boot up my PE and see if i can run the malware program from there, and Ill also post those 2 registry file exports.

Hello.
Thanks, that shows the problem somewhat. I'm guessing you know a little about the registry then. Smile...

Go back to both registry run keys, were gonna delete some values. I also see you have TeaTimer from Spybot running, so if TeaTimer warns of a registry change, allow it otherwise it will block our fix and this won't work.

First, lets do the HKLM one.

Navigate to this Run key again:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Delete this value in the right side pane: "13386254"

Now for the next one, navigate to the Run key again:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Delete this value in the right side pane too: "Monopod"
Also, delete this one for now: "SpybotSD TeaTimer"

After doing that, reboot normally.

See if you can boot normally now, that should have disabled it enough.

Hmmm...before your last post Belahzur I was poking around and still trying different things to get rid of this pain in the ass virus, and in the process those 2 run key registry values have changed.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ctfmon.exe"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\ctfmon.exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"SunKistEM"="C:\\Program Files\\Digital Media Reader\\shwiconem.exe"
"AlcWzrd"="ALCWZRD.EXE"
"Alcmtr"="ALCMTR.EXE"
"IgfxTray"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\igfxtray.exe"
"Runserver"="C:\\DOCUME~1\\Owner\\LOCALS~1\\Temp\\update1.exe"
"StartCCC"="\"C:\\Program Files\\ATI Technologies\\ATI.ACE\\Core-Static\\CLIStart.exe\" MSRun"
"MSConfig"="C:\\WINDOWS\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Binaries\\MSConfig.exe /auto"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\IMAIL]
"Installed"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MAPI]
"Installed"="1"
"NoChange"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS]
"Installed"="1"

Those are the new values. What I was doing was going over the different programs that run during startup via the system config utility, and i noticed 13386254 and disabled it. I might have jumped the gun a little and deleted some suspect processes in task manager, although I cant remember which ones specifically. Im guessing thats why the run keys are different now, I did however get some more freedom out of my PC after the changes I made. I can run pretty much any program now, except for my anti virus programs, and despite the fact that my UI is completely blank (minus my background image) I can still log in and play WoW lol.

When I try to run Hijackthis, the same thing happens when I try to run an AV program. It will run at first, start scanning, but then the program will shut down and any further attempts to open it again gets me an error message saying I may not have permission to use it.

Don't worry, I aren't done yet. Now you "don't have permission" I know where to look.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

    Code:

    :filefind
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\scecli.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

    The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Lets see if we can iron out the bumps.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Security Center 2009 virus CF_download_FF

    Security Center 2009 virus CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
    ***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Security Center 2009 virus Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Security Center 2009 virus Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
    Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
