Hello.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Universal Installer] "C:\Program Files\ComcastUI\Universal Installer\uinstaller.exe" /fromrun /starthidden
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Desktop Software] "C:\Program Files\ComcastUI\Universal Installer\uinstaller.exe" /ini "uinstaller.ini" /fromrun /starthidden

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hello.
Yes it does. Just one more scan log I want to see, make sure there's no left behind folders laying around.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

========== REGISTRY ==========
Well you must have seen something because I'm still getting the "firewall" warning balloon etc etc on startup today.

This is one pathologic piece of malware!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SecurityProviders\\"SecurityProviders"|"msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll" /E : value set successfully!
Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ deleted successfully.

Hello.
Lets try the obvious. What does the alert say? perhaps it's real. Some malware disables/turns off the Windows firewall so it makes it easier for malware to be downloaded.

If the alert is real, then you just need to turn it back on.

Let me know.

Hmmm ...

"Your computer may be at risk. Firewall is turned off. Click this balloon to fix this problem."

I checked control panel/Security Center and indeed it was OFF. So I turned it ON. How about that? It appears this warning balloon may have been legitimate. If so it should now disappear during startup.

Startup continues to be slow but after 15 - 20 minutes I can open the internet, files etc. and after that everything runs normally. Things are a LOT better now than when this first started.

descriptionSystem Security "virus" EmptyRe: System Security "virus"

more_horiz
Interesting ... I did a restart and the balloon reappeared, but I then rechecked Security and firewall is still ON. So maybe it is bogus?

Startup is quicker if I force the action (10 minutes), but windows open very slowly. Before when I forced action things would grind to a halt and I would have to reboot and be patient before trying to open the internet or "start".

Something is still amiss but maybe now it's something minor ...

Was going to ask: is it now OK to turn on Spybot's TeaTimer as well as System Restore which has been off per prior advice from Avast support staff?

Hello.
Turn system restore back on, but keep TeaTimer off for now.

C'mon ... you knew it'd be faster :-) But I want my SWA Ding back! (I'll just sign-up again).

Popup firewall-warning balloon is gone and start-up / internet access took just a few minutes. Knowing what I know about System Security, it may be premature to declare victory, but that appears to be the case right now. All systems appear to be operating normally.

I'll start a new thread and reference this one if I "relapse."

I am going to restore the TeaTimer (and remember to turn it off for any future HJT scans) and remove some desktop "bandages."

Some good came out of this horrible viral infection. I learned a lot about the diagnosis and treatment of computer viruses/malware. And I found a great group of doctors to see should I get "sick" in the future.

Thanks Belazhur. My hats off to you and the other members of the GP for giving so freely of your time and talents to those who need your help.

Ding is a toolbar alert (audible "ding") from Southwest Airlines (USA) of short-term discounted fares. You then click on it to display the fares via internet explorer.

Sure I'd like to get it back. I'm a SWA frequent traveler.

Today's startup was not as quick as yesterdays. I'd say about 10 minutes to boot and open the internet.

That pesky balloon reappeared today during startup... when the security badge appears in the toolbar, a black line will crawl over the toolbar to the badge and the balloon will then appear. It goes away when the rest of the toolbar loads and the security badge disappears.

The sign-on window for MSN explorer opened slowly ("pieces" at a time) and after signing on, the computer seemed to struggle to open and load the MSN main screen.

These delays only occur on initial startup. After I've opened internet once, I can re-open it with minimal delay.

Thoughts?

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Choose "View list of backups"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O4 - Startup: DING!.lnk = C:\Program Files\Southwest Airlines\Ding\Ding.exe

  • Press "Restore"
  • Close Hijack This.

Now next time you boot up, it's back. Smile...
