Hi, I'm using Windows XP Home w/ service pack 3. About a week ago my computer was infected with a nasty virus that wouldn't allow me to get online or open any anti-virus or malware software; it also changed my desktop background to a poorly worded warning that began with "all you do with computer [sic] is stored forever..." After some Malwarebytes trickery I was able to get my system back (at least partially), but I believe something is still wrong. I can only access the internet some of the time, and I can tell from the Networking tab in task manager that something is active on my connection when I'm not doing anything (especially when it's not letting me get online). Also, I have a ton of processes named "svchost.exe," which I know is bad, but when I do a process scan with Avira AntiVir it finds nothing. AVG and AntiVir both find trojans (identified as win32/cryptor) shortly after boot-up, but when I try to heal, delete, quarantine, or just find and delete the files in explorer, I get error messages. Something is sticking around and I don't know how to eradicate it. Also, can't boot up in safe mode - I get a blue screen of death.

Anyway, here is my HJT log. I've related all the basic info - please let me know if I left out anything important or didn't properly prepare my system to receive help (tried my best, not 100% sure all steps worked). I have free versions of AVG, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and Avira AntiVir, all closed or disabled for the moment.

I see AVG 8 running there along side Avira AntiVir. Did you intend this?

Running two or more real-time anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall monitors at the same time can cause a conflict. That conflict can result in slow computer performance, error messages, crashes of the programs or other types of failure. You will very likely end up with little or no protection.

I would recommend keeping Avira and deleting AVG 8:

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs:

  • AVG Free 8.5
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04

Next,

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Okay, I'm having trouble removing the last two programs you listed (Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 and Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04). Deleted AVG and both J2SE Runtime Environment programs via Add/ Remove Programs, but the last two give me an error message saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." It asks me to specify an alternate path to the installation package (not sure where it would be or if I even have it). Should I try something else to remove these, or just continue with the rest of your instructions?

Just continue with the rest of the instruction, we have a tool to remove java but we will do so later.

    Link 2
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
    ***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Virus has taken hold and won't let go - possibly win32/crypt Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Virus has taken hold and won't let go - possibly win32/crypt Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
    Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I downloaded ComboFix and tried to run it, but it told me that Panda Cloud Antivirus is still on my computer and will interfere with ComboFix. I've already uninstalled Panda Cloud (was using its real time "protection" when this virus attacked in the first place) - it no longer appears under Add/ Remove Programs. I still have a folder in Program Files called Panda Security, which contains another folder, Panda Cloud Antivirus, which holds two files: psumain.exe and pskdr.act. The executable file will not open, saying a dll is missing - should I reinstall this program in order to uninstall it properly, or is there a simpler way to remove its remnants so that CF will work?

Just ignore the warning and let it run, it's just finding a leftover registry key.

Forgot to mention - I ran ComboFix once and after my computer restarted, a log never generated (program seemed to stall during bootup), so I ran it a second time and got a log, which is what I've posted. It looks like it includes information from the first scan - let me know if there's anything else I can do to be more helpful, and of course thank you so much for the assistance thus far.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

File::
c:\windows\system32\idodumen.tmp
c:\windows\system32\uvakusab.tmp
c:\windows\system32\fodadowa.exe
c:\windows\system32\evirufah.tmp

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"17855:TCP"=-
"17855:UDP"=-

Driver::
ckrry
tqujfpp
9a882101
lich

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
Virus has taken hold and won't let go - possibly win32/crypt Sfxdaw

This will open combofix again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run.
It may want to reboot after it's done. (It will warn you if it wants to)
Post the resulting log back here.

Hello.
Malware has snook back in.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

Driver::
avast!Antivirus

File::
c:\windows\system32\avast!Antivirus.exe

FCopy::
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ndis.sys | c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

DDS::
uStart Page = about:blank

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
Virus has taken hold and won't let go - possibly win32/crypt Sfxdaw

This will open combofix again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run.
It may want to reboot after it's done. (It will warn you if it wants to)
Post the resulting log back here.

Malwarebytes found nothing - could it be true? Computer is running much more smoothly, not blocking me from the internet, also no unauthorized network activity. I do still have six svchost.exe's, though... heh

It's running much more quickly and smoothly than before. After combofix was done uninstalling I enabled AntiVir again, and it hasn't detected anything so far. Like I said, no more mysterious fluctuations in bandwidth use while I'm not doing anything. I'm having no more symptoms and it seems like the solution worked!

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this problem. I will definitely be donating and referring friends.

Glad we could help 😉

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
