Hi there,

I've had an unknown virus / trojan / worm of some kind on my system for a few days now. It started when I ran what I thought was a crack for a game. The next time I booted up I was prompted with the user Windows XP login screen, which I don't usually have. Upon proceding the taskbar wouldn't load, my desktop icons wouldn't load and a message came up for each program that was trying to run saying it'd been blocked (followed by the Send to Microsoft window).

I've rebooted in Safe Mode many times, run AVG scans, run Mbam scans, found threats, gotten rid of them, but after each scan I keep finding new ones, sometimes more, sometimes less. Most recently I found 10 threats including some worms as well as the usual torjans, which I had found all along. I tried booting in Safe Mode with Networking so I could update AVG and Mbam. Mbam updated, and then found threats in a scan. AVG doesn't show an update screen in Safe Mode, so I haven't able to update AVG.

The last couple scans I have done has returned no threats, so I thought I was in the clear, but when I boot normally the taskbar still won't load, no desktop icons, and I get the same blocked programs message.

Somehow I managed to boot up normally once or twice and I could access the net, but I couldn't go to the AVG site. I assume the virus is blocking it, and blocking the AVG update function. As well as Mbam. I haven't been able to update Mbam since that one time in Safe Mode with Networking.

I've tried doing a System Restore a few times, each time it has seemed to work, but when I get into Windows I get the message that a program has been blocked, and then the Send to Microsoft window again, AND then a message saying System Restore failed.

I think my files are intact, but I think my emails and contacts in Outlook are gone, as well as settings for Outlook and other programs I use (MailWasher is one of them).

I am appreciative of any help you can give me. Smile...

I am booted up in Safe Mode, and thus I don't have the internet on my infected machine. I've downloaded Combofix from another machine, and copied it across on a USB drive.

AVG isn't running in Safe Mode, is this the same as having it's resident sheild disabled?

I tried installing Combofix on my infected machine, and I was given this message:

!! ALERT !! It is not safe to continue.
ComboFix has been compromised, please download a fresh copy from here: (URL).
Note: You may be infected with a file patching virus 'virut'

I can try booting the infected machine up in Safe Mode with Networking to try and get access to the internet on it again, but I am pretty sure I have lost my networking settings. I hope using the USB from one machine tot he infected one hasn't made matters worse, but I fear it has.

I thought I should post back here before attempting to get Windows Recovery Console on my infected machine. I'm not quite sure how I will be able to do that...

descriptionHelp! Unknown virus / trojan / worm EmptyRe: Help! Unknown virus / trojan / worm

more_horiz
This sounds like Virut:

I'm afraid I have bad news.

Your system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can format should it happen to become infected from the backups.

For more information, please see Here

Instructions how to format and reinstall Windows can be found Here

Oh man! Sad tearing

Thanks for the advice though!

Ok, I have an external HDD that I keep a lot of my personal files on, backups, music, etc. It has been plugged into the infected machine this whole time, and I have included it in nearly all the scans I have conducted. Will this have increased the chance of it's contents being infected?

Will backing up other files from my main HDD to the external HDD increase chance of those files becoming infected? For example, will the process of copying .exe and .scr files infect those files?

descriptionHelp! Unknown virus / trojan / worm EmptyRe: Help! Unknown virus / trojan / worm

more_horiz
Yes it could infect your external hard drive, just don't back up any .exe and .scr because they could spread to other files.

Hi again, I think the virus is back. I wasn't diligent enough in eradicating all possibly infected files. See I'm a web designer, and I have a lot of HTML files on my machine. I'm going thru them now and deleting them all.

I'm also running several searches so I can delete HTML, HTM, ASP and PHP files.

I have run Spybot and everything is good. I'm also running an AVG scan now, and so far it's detected nothing.

Is there anything I can do to confirm I am clean or not? I'm afraid to reboot the machine at this stage! Sad tearing

You don't need to delete the HTML files, just go through them and look for any ~[Filtered HTML]~=> tags that you didn't put in there that also point to funny looking links, then remove them.
