I have worked for many hours on a friends system of which I removed 29 viruses (I am using my own system at the moment) the progs I used were nod eset, ad-aware, spybot and microsoft malware remover. this was successful for 28 of them execept for one, win32.agent.odg of which I presume was responsible for the other 28 infections. the above mentioned progs will not have a bar of this virus and after countless hours of scanning, my eyeballs have packed it in from staring at a monitor for so long, I am cranky irritable and I am about to do the biggest dummy spit mankind has ever seen, AAAAAAARRGH! The OS on the infected system is xp home edition and if someone could kindly give me some guidence on a manual removal of this rotten trojan, if possible, I would be extremely grateful. Cheers PB

Hello instead of right clicking and choosing paste using the mouse use the keyboard, Highlight ALL the contents in the Hijackthis log and click copy, now press and hold Ctrl+V on your keyboard, does that work?

Hi, I did as you said and a virus of a different name was detected and malbyte said it removed it. I rebooted system and a systray baloon came up and stated this system is infected with win32.agent.odg.... I then went through the removal process again and the malbyte log stated that one infection was removed once again this virus as in both removals is win32.alureon.bf
the status quo of the system is still infected with win32.agent.odg and also by the look of it win32.alureon.bf. I have rescanned with hijackthis and reposted. cheers, pete

Hello.
Before we can remove the rootkit, we need to uninstall a few things otherwise it will interfere.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello.

I see that you are running Limewire.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 13
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    LimeWire 4.16.6
    Norton Security Scan
    RegCure 1.5.0.0

Next.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    win32.agent.odg CF_download_FF

    win32.agent.odg CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (ESET Nod32)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    win32.agent.odg Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    win32.agent.odg Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post the OTMoveIt log.

Hi and tnx, I removed the programs on previous posting as I fully took your advice, no reference to limewire or the other program was in program files??? but anyway I did as you requested with OTmove it except I goofed and ran clean it thinking I was running OTMit as you requested. I have noticed that this did clean files and saved them to OTM directories in C drive. I then banged my head into a wall to wake myself up and then read your instructions properly, I ran OTMit again with the pasting as you requested. I hope I didn't mess you around. cheers pete

there was a little more to do, I ran in depth scans by nod 32 eset and adaware and although nod eset showed a clean scan when I ran ad-aware it triggered a response from nod eset that a potential threat was found and quarantined the files. below is a log of the files. As you see I removed by deleting the quarantined files I then ran 2 more in depth scans by both programs again
and no problems, the system is really ticking over and running well with no more viruses, I cannot thank you enough, I will go to the other page as I wish to give you more praise. on your reply I will remove my self from the watch list and once again heartfelt thanks

Hello.

Nothing to worry about here, C:\System Volume Information is just the system restore folder, it's just infected restore points from this infection we cleaned up.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
