after reinstalling XP, my computer wont go on the internet

So it seems my computer was hit hard by some malware or viruses before, because it caused a registry error and severely slowed down my computer until it didnt work anymore.

As hard as it was, i deleted everything and reformatted my computer, but the problem now is whenever i try to install XP into my computer, it says that it cant find I386. I think i fixed that by getting the folder from another comptuer and putting it on a CD to load from during the process.

This aside, even before i figured out how to do that, everything worked fine, except for the fact that my computer cant go on the internet. I have cable, and it plugs and plays with my laptop, so im sure the connection is fine. I just downloaded Hijack this and combofix, i have to get it on the computer first though. Would those logs help?

Ive tried looking in my network connections and control panel for yellow boxes telling me that theres drivers missing, but the only drivers im missing are ones for my soundcard, which i dont think have anything to do with this. Im using windows XP pro, media center edition, and it's all legit, so i dont know why it wouldnt work. Im thinking there may still be traces of the old malware left, but im really not sure.
