Failure to remove Personal Guard 2009 after all steps

Post by choynot on Thu 05 Nov 2009, 11:51 am

First, thank you VERY MUCH- I got rid of Alpha Antivirus via your help. Now, can't do it again to remove Personal Guard 2009.

First, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is already on my computer. Didn't catch Personal Guard 2009 ( is it supposed to?? ) then when I clicked on the desktop icon to scan, nothing happened. After download it again & again, no page shows up to perform a scan. Instead, this following info showed up on my screen:

unable to execute file: C:Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
Create Process failed; code 2,
This system cannot find the file specified.

Please advise. Thanks.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Here is the logfile. I read others' posts and feel uneasy about Win32 as I always see a window indicating "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" being closed and a report needs to be sent.

Please review & thank you for the help.

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis

I did the first part- the HijackThis part- to check boxes & "fix checked". And I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-malware again (as it's been installed already) and went through Setup Wizard all steps. I can see the program being installed and the same message shows up:

unable to execute file: C:Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
Create Process failed; code 2,
This system cannot find the file specified.

When I click the desk top shortcut for Malwarebytes, it says "missing shortcut". I can get it to perform a scan. Tried to remove this program and re-load it but nothing seems to work... yet.

Really appreciate your time & help.

Please download ComboFix from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I would also like to see a list of installed programs, so please do this:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

In your next reply, please include the ComboFix log and the Add-Remove Programs log.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

How is the machine running now?

I can't run ComboFix/ u as Windows cannot find it. I remember ComboFix.exe was saved and renamed to commy.exe. Made a search for commy.exe but didn't find it either.

The machine is running as good as before although a message of "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services being closed" still pops up after every reboot. Should I be concerned?
