Win32/Cryptor help, please

Got the virus some time recently and already my laptop is uncooperative and difficult.

AVG wouldn't update so I had to download the newest version 8.5.329 and installed it. It finds 12 threats all to do with win32/cryptor. It got rid of six, but six remain. I ran truesword which gives me the all clear, but since I have no IE working, I guess it missed something.

I have mbam installed but the virus stops it working. Haven't tried it in safe mode since I'm paranoid I'll kill my laptop completely and I need the work I have done on it in the past week for college next week.

This is getting quite frustrating. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Hello.
You are running two antivirus', I see from the uninstall list you have Norton/Symantec installed, along with AVG. This is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause more problems. I would recommend that you remove Symantec to avoid conflict and other future problems.

Completely Uninstall Norton software using:

  • SymNRT.exe
Instructions

  1. Please download and save SymNRT.exe to your desktop.
  2. Close all programs and double click on the tool.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Restart the computer if asked.
  5. Then delete the SymNRT.exe tool from your desktop.
  6. Open the Program Files folder on your local disk ( normally C: )
  7. Find and delete the following folders (if present):
    [list]
  8. Norton AntiVirus
  9. Norton Internet Security
  10. Norton SystemWorks
  11. Norton Personal Firewall

Next:

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

  • Adobe Reader 8.1.1
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 5
  • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Next step:

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O2 - BHO: WinInet Class - {39fc2065-c9c7-49cd-8942-44cc2dedc844} - C:\WINDOWS\ieocx.dll

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

Note: This tool was posted specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

I appreciate your help very much, Belahzur.

I was trying to (unsuccessfully) uninstall Norton yesterday but forgot about it when win32/cryptor took over. Since it was expired SymNRT directed me to http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2006050909471013 to download Norton Removal Tool - 2009.0.5.26. It asked for a restart. A disc check occured upon start up. Uninstall successful. Thanks!!

Removed programs as advised.

Fix checked as advised.

Avenger installed and used as advised.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (AVG8)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Win32/Cryptor help, please Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Win32/Cryptor help, please Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi again,

I have downloaded ComboFix and disabled AVG but when I doubleclick ComboFix, an hourglass appears for a second or two then disappears. Nothing else happened and I am unable to complete your request.

descriptionWin32/Cryptor help, please EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor help, please

When I rightclick the ComboFix, there is an option "Run as" which when I click says:

"Which user account do you want to run this program?

*Current user - me
Ticked - Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity
This option can prevent computer viruses from harming your computer or personal data, but selecting it might cause the program to function improperly."

Should I use that option to see if ComboFix works?

No, do this. Delete your copy of Combofix.

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Win32/Cryptor help, please CF_download_FF

Win32/Cryptor help, please CF_download_rename

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

I do not have Firefox and I am currently using a borrowed laptop to follow your instructions. This means I save eveything on to my jumpdrive and transfer the information and programs between the two.

Renaming it worked. ComboFix installed Recovery Console.

It gave me a Rootkit!! list:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACnbmroijrsbuwupb.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACpogsbonduxpedbi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACewnqnevtftdqftj.dat

C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACuqwfousbvnwwane.log
C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACfawxguxyxchhgfa.log
C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACmbroocudxxdwtvb.log

When I pressed OK, it did a restart. Disc check on start up.

I followed your instructions, enabled AVG and surfed the net without errors and pages loaded normally. Clicking on Yahoo results doe not seem to be redirected, either. All my research seems to be intact so that makes me happiest!!

The initial load to my homepage is rather slow from what I remember but it loads as one segment now, instead of showing the bar and the green stripes filling it as it loads. (I hope you know what I mean.) So maybe it's fine, too.

Thankyou for spending so much time helping me.

Is there anything else I need to do? If not, can I delete all the programs now; mbam, hjt, malwarebytes?

Is there anything (IE?) I should update as a matter of urgency?

Since you uninstalled the old Adobe Reader and Java, if you want to use them, follow these instructions.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13.
  • Select the first option where it says "This release includes the highly anticipated...".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Then download and install Adobe Reader 9.1

Thank you, Belahzur.

I have done that and it was successful, too.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
