Ok, to set up the scenario. I have 5meg internet with a Belkin N wireless router that is hard wired to my dad's computer, and I have a Linksys G PCI adapter in my computer. My father's computer's download and upload speed is normal, but after no hardware or software changes my connection has dropped drastically. I am downloading at 500-700 kbps and uploading at 450 kbps (dslreports.com, speedtests.com, and speakeasy.com tested on both computers). I can not think of anything at all. I am running windows 7 32 bit, but I have been running that all along and no new updates have been released. The internet is also requiring ALOT more RAM and CPU usage than normal, and I am experiencing a highly annoying ammount of lag. I have an AMD Athelon X2 64 bit dual core and 4GB of DIMM DDR2 RAM. Any posible solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

You said the Internet is requiring more RAM and CPU usage, do you mean that the browser you are using uses more RAM and CPU usage?

Also, these kinds of speed drops can be due to your ISP. You should call them up and ask them why did your 5meg connection drop to 500-700kbps. If they are having any maintenance in the area it could cause the speed to drop.

Yes, the browser itself is using much more RAM and CPU than normal, and as I stated, the hardwired computer is getting the full 5 meg connection. That is why this is so confusing.

These may be the cause of wireless.
1)The speed of internet also differ on latency to the speedtest server
2)It maybe be alot of people may be using the same isp as you at the same time.(Shared ISP)
3)Electronic interference(Radio frequency)
5)Weak transmitter(signal strength)
4)Weak reciever(signal strength)
5)What Doc said, some buggers might be tapping your internet

And to add one more thing to the list, your wireless network might be tapped on.

1)checked many servers, and cannot play my MMORPG
2)only one other person on this IP and their computer was turned off at the time of the test
3)all electronics in the house have been purchased to not interfere with the wireless network in the house
4)good signal strength
5)good signal strength
6)secured wireless network, and i only have 2 neighbors(live in the middle of no where) and one is 60+ does not own a computer and the other is 80+ with a beach house that they are normally at

the connection is very intermittent at the moment i have a full connection, but last night had no connection at all (computer was on all night long, no reboot) that is why this is so puzzling

Have you contact your ISP?

the problem is somewhere in the wireless connection, the hard wired computer is not having these problems

Does your connection speed improve if you run in Safe Mode with Networking? If so, that would imply that there's a software related issue. If not, a hardware related issue. Note, be extremely careful on the internet when testing this - your antivirus software and third-party firewall might not be running in Safe Mode.

not exactly sure how to boot in safe mode since i'm dual booting two operating systems

i'm deleting windows xp and i now am going to attempt to un-partition my hard drive inside windows 7, they really changed things on windows 7 lol. if i can't un-partition it, i'll just run win7 64 bit on the secondary partition. the windows xp partition is all messed up because i didn't authenticate the operating system and now i can't play my one video game because it needs to be uninstalled on both partitions but i can't uninstall it on the windows xp partition bc i'm locked out. just gonna wipe out windows xp and run pure windows 7. think i found the internet problem, and if not i'll just buy a better wireless adapter and that would solve either a hardware or software problem and i'll be done with the headache

ok, I could just leave this post as is, but i want to let others feel like no question is stupid. You are not stupid if your solution is the most obvious one. I am currently studying to be an IT Technician, and I am 70% through my training and retaining the knowledge.

Problem was something I should have checked immediately. My antenna was not screwed in tightly enough, and It was a hardware/user problem. Only reason I am admitting to this is so that no one feels that they are incompetent or stupid for posting on this forum
