Hello, I'm running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 on a laptop. I was given this laptop by a friend. Once I began using it, I noticed gpedit.msc wouldn't work, as soon as it began the laptop would restart. It did the same thing with command prompt and also task manager. Suspecting it to be a virus, I installed AVG, it found many, including Brontok.X and Trogan Generic10.VWU.
I tried to install HJT, which caused a restart. It had extracted it though, but whenever i try to run it it restarted. After i ran a full scan with AVG, I restarted the computer, and now upon logging in im automatically logged out. I've tried using safe mode (with and without command prompt/networking) and still the same problem. I did read the "Read This" thread, and I noticed in the Program Files folder, there was no Java folder so I'm assuming java is NOT installed, but I can't even log in to install it. Anyone have any ideas on how to get back in and how to get rid of Brontok.X .
Thanks
