I'm running Windows XP, and currently running from an Ubuntu disc while trying to solve this.

About 2 days ago I installed what I thought to be a game. I'm pretty certain now that it's a virus. However, before I installed it I checked it with AVG and it never found any virus. Anyways, I booted up earlier this morning and received a "Master Boot Record Error: Press any key to restart" On occasion I can boot into windows fine. The first time it successfully went in it ran fine for about 20 minutes or so, and then I ended up getting an error saying that adobe flash was having trouble running. I couldn't quite see the entire message since I had another window above it, but it looked like an error that you get if you are using too much of your memory. Which I'm fairly certain it was since the computer ended up freezing. I ended up re-writing the MBR by doing the fixmbr in the recovery console. Then the last time I went into windows it ran for about 5 hours or so during which I ran a virus scan. The scan ended up getting hung on "C:\Windows\system32\mfc42u.dll" before freezing. Not sure if it means anything, but I figured I'd say that.

Though, I think that if AVG couldn't find the virus when I put the game in I don't think it would find it anytime soon.

But at this point I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to format my HD because of my files, and I don't have enough room on my second HD for the stuff I would like to keep. So any ideas about what to do would be great.

Oh one more note: Since the last time I booted into windows and I tried to boot it up again I would get the windows logo and it would look like it was loading, but after that I get a black screen that stays there forever, so I don't think it would be possible to load windows again... Assuming I don't get lucky again at loading it.

Are you able to boot into safe mode?

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, keep tapping F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the option, to run Windows in Safe Mode with Networking.

Also, do you have your XP CD? You can perform a repair of the OS.

I have a windows XP cd. The recovery discs that came with this system however only has the option of letting you format the HD, but I will try and look for my old XP disc.

I was able to successfully boot into safe mode, but after I ended up doing an OS repair, but I ended up getting an "Internal Setup Error" so most of the files are in there, but not all, so now I can't boot into windows at all. I'm just gonna have to find a way to copy my files somewhere, and format.

Oh well. Thanks for the reply.
