This is for my Acer workstation at work. IT support is not able to help me. I have full administrator access to my workstation. It is running Windows XP Professional. It is connected to a network. It has Symantec Antivirus 10 Full Version installed and no other antivirus programs.

Around the time of the IE security scare a few months back, Symantec detected some trojans. It was able to get rid of all except for Backdoor.Tidserv!inf. I didn't know how to get rid of it so I left it alone and started using Google Chrome instead of IE. Chrome was working fine until a few days ago when it couldn't connect to websites on the first try. Sometimes it would be unresponsive, so I would open a new tab. Internet speed seems reduced significantly. So I searched again for a way to get rid of Backdoor.Tidserv and found this post on Symantec Website:
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-091809-0911-99&tabid=3
I ended up finding TDSS.TMP in a system folder and deleted it. I also deleted HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TDSServ which was the only registry entry I could find out of the things Symantec advised to delete.

Now Symantec does not detect any virus or malware when I do a full scan. But I keep getting pop-ups and internet speed is still slow. When I try Windows Update, the website says:

The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running:

Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)

I checked all 3 and they look correct.

Also the workstation has an Acer system management application at startup that keep popping back up even after I close it. I'm also connected to a network via Citrix and Citrix has been randomly crashing with a Wfica32.exe error.

I appreciate any help. Thank you.

When I tried "Do a System Scan Only" on Hijackthis I was missing line:

Symantec Antivirus detected and cleaned "Antivirus 2009" virus before I could run Hijackthis.

That's probably why you couldn't find one of the HJT lines.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

descriptionBackdoor.Tidserv!inf and malware problem EmptyRe: Backdoor.Tidserv!inf and malware problem

more_horiz

Lets remove the tools we have used, they can't be trusted if you don't know how to handle them.

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it again.
  • Press the green CleanUp! button.
  • Press Yes cleanup process prompt.
  • It will start cleaning now, and will want to reboot after, please allow it to do so.
  • It will make a log of what it has removed, but I don't need to see the log.

====

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.
