Trojan.Brisv.A!inf

Hi, I stupidly downloaded a music file from limewire and got the trojan.brisv.a!inf virus. I ran the removal tool from Symantec in safe mode. It said virus not found. But when It tried to run a full system scan with norton, it will run until about 35,000 files then it just disappears. quits for no reason and the iexplorer message comes up about 'do you want to send this messag to microsoft'. my computer is running really slow and my homepage changed today, so it is still on the computer. Please help. I'm not great with computers. These things really scare me!

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

• Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  
• Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  
• Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  
• From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).
  

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

thank you so much for your prompt reply. i was on with symantec yesterday and they were remotely controlling my machine to try and fix it. but they quit half way through. might have been a bad connection. could this be the remote access your seeing - or backdoor( i'm not sure what that is)? as you said, i really don't have the means to reinstall the os. anything you could do would be so appreciated. if you can help me try and clean it out, i would be very grateful. thanks

Okay, but I'm not sure we can clean this. The infection is using a legit service name, so stopping the service kills your machine at the same time.

You are running an old version of Hijack This, and we need to use the new version before we can do anything else.

• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
  

i was afraid you were going to say that. now i'm really worried. it sounds like this may be very diificult to do and possibly, well...not possible. can i still use the computer for awhile, as long as i never connect to the internet with it again? it is an older machine. i'm probably due for a new one this year anyway. --or is it possible for them to connect to the wireless even if the switch is in the off? also will the virus attach to any files (microsoft office files, powerpoint - excel, etc) if i save them and transfer them to a cd or flash drive? i really don't want anyone else to get this from me. also, are all of my itunes files corrupted now? or is there some way to determine if they are safe? can i transfer them to another machine or do i have to repurchase them? sorry for all the questions. i'm sure other people have problems you can devote your time too more productively than mine. if you could please answer these questions for me. i just really don't want to give these problems to someone else by accident. thak you so much for your time. i really appreciate it.

Your files are safe, it's just malware using legit services as a shield. We can try to remove the malware, but I'd recommend a format.

Yes, that's why in my post I included this bit:

"Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net."

Formatting will wipe EVERYTHING, including your stuff.
