descriptionSolvedDVD Rom Not recognized. Can't run or burn DVD's. Please Help!!

Hello,

My DVD Rom is no longer being recognised by my computer. This problem started this morning and I can't seem to fix it. My computer is now showing D:/ as a CD Rom instead of a DVD Rom as it is supposed to and it won't recognize any DVD's nor will it burn any.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Service pack 3. I remember that my DVD drive is a Phillips DVD 8x, at least, that is what it used to be called when I would burn to it from Nero. Nero no longer recognizes any DVD burner or drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no hardware god, but I'll take a wild guess.
I'm assuming you checked the ribbon and power cable at the back of the DVD-R drive?

Hey Belahzur,

It's a laptop, so I am not sure how I would go about checking to make sure the DVD drive is plugged into the rest of the computer. I suppose I would have to take it apart??

Ah.
Well if it's anything like my laptop, you can take the entire drive out, there's only one (small) screw holding it in. LMBO or ROFL

FYI - My laptop's DVD drive was ment to be a writer, it's only a reader. LOL Banner

PROBLEM SOLVED..

Ok....so apparently I am a moron. I took out the safety screw holding the drive in place. Took out the drive, jammed it back in, and now it seems to work just fine.

My apologies for wasting your time.

While I have your ear though. Every once in a while, a windows sound decides to cue itself at random. I Believe it is the sound that plays when an error message occurs.

The reason this is a problem is that I am an Audio technician and when I do cues for theatrical performances, I risk this sound being played through the house audio system at random moments when I am using my computer for cueing effects and music.

I'm not sure if this is the result of a virus or something to do with my system configuration.

You can disable this error sound by editing the registry, but before you do that, it is recommend that you back it up first, read here on how to do so.

Start >> Run >> Type in regedit >> OK >> Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound.

On the right side of window, double click Beep >> Change Value data to no >> OK

Done.

Another thing, the Virus, Spyware & Malware Removal forum will also be opened for you to check for viruses. 😉
