Do you mean that you have partitioned your drive and windows see's it in 'my computer' but when you boot from the XP install disc, you dont get the option of which partition to install on?

Did you select custom install?

Also, do you mean that now you have installed a separate 'physical' hard drive, the install now see's the partitions on the original drive?

I'm not sure I follow?

The computer doesnt see my sata drive that i bought brand new when I am loading the o/s but if you go in the boot sector it is listed. it is the only drive in the computer. it is a western digital and I used the utility disk that came with it to partition it. then i put xp in to install an o/s on it and it gets to the part of the disk after you press f8 to accept the next section. i am supposed to be able to select a partition or delete a partion. however it says no disk so it isnt seeing the hard drive or the partition. when i used the utility disk that came with the hard drive called data life guard to form partitions it showed me my two dvd roms one being primary and the other being secondary and the hard drive showed up as unrecognized disk but when I clicked that title the drive was there with the 5 partitions i created on the 500 gb drive. I tryed a eide hard drive that i had setting around by plugging it in to the primary eide cable where a dvd rom was and loaded the o/s and it seen that drives partition. the boot sector sees the hard drive and reports its name. The only thing i can figure is I am supposed to do something in the boot sector for a sata drive verses an eide or maybe use fat32 instead of nfts? I had this same problem once before when I tryed putting sata on another computer. eide gets seen and sata doesnt and I dont know why? this computer was already using sata when it caught a virus. I striped the original hard drive and couldnt get that one to work, thought it was damaged bought a new one and same problem. There are also 4 jumper settings on the sata drive. default which i left it set to by not installing a jumper, ssc, pm2, and opt1. Not sure what those do. What am I not doing right to run a sata drive?

When you install a new drive the first thing you should check is that it is recognized in the BIOS.

After its recognized, then you need to format it with the file system NTFS which you should be able to do from the utility disk that the drive shows up with.

After you have formatted the drive then you can start partitioning, and because you have partitioned already you will have to format each partition seperately now.

After the whole drive has been formatted with NTFS and the BIOS sees it, then you can boot from your windows install disc and select a partition to install windows on. (Preferably the primary partition c/:)

Windows will not recognize a new drive until it has been formatted with a file system (ie Fat32, NTFS etc)

On data life guard tools in the set up drive section it has to titles mother board controller and unknown controller. My hard drive is partitioned in ntfs and shows up under unknown controller. It is on a sata cable.

I did some research and some people said you have to hit f6 and load the sata drivers manually for the computer. I tryed and it still didnt work.

I remember i had a similar issue some years back with a Sata drive one of my builds.

From memory, I downloaded a RAID driver pac from my mobo manufacturers website and assigned the drive a RAID array which worked to get it hopping in windows.
