Working with Windows XP Home Edition

Not sure if this is the right section but I just did a bunch of updates on my computer including Windows Updates, Java Updates, etc. And now when I save stuff on my slave drive, I can't rename it. For example if it's named justc.avi and I go rename it to the real title without the avi a warning pops up saying that if I change the name the file might not work. It never used to do this til i did all the updates so how can I fix that. Anyway to rename without that poppin up and without having to put the file type in the title like "suchandsuch.avi" I want it to be just suchandsuch but when I do that it changes the type of file and makes it non-readable.

Hello.
Don't take file extensions off, as it says, the files may not work.

Do this to remove file extension.

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hide extensions for known file types.
  5. Make sure the check box is ticked.
  6. Press "Apply for all folders"
  7. Press OK.
  8. Close My Computer.

File extensions should be gone.

Thanks that did the trick. Another question, my slave drive also looks funny, not like a hard drive but like a data file I can't read. I have to right click and hit open or explore, I can't just double left click on it anymore like I used to...Any ideas on that? Sorry to be a pain, you've been more than helpful already.
