Credit crunched rejoice: the world’s first $10 laptop is set to be unveiled on Monday. Yeah, $10. Kinda makes a joke out of OLPC, doesn’t it?
The budget box is set to be unveiled at the launch of the Indian government’s National Mission on Education through Information and Communication on Monday as part of a joint effort by several universities in the country.
The project was started several years ago after One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) founder Nicholas Negroponte tried to sell the $100 laptop scheme to the Indian government, who promptly said they could do better for less and told him to shove it. There’s no confirmed specs, but unofficial sources are touting 2GB of memory, Wi-Fi, ethernet and serious low power consumption of around 2 watts.
We’re a little dubious to say the least about this, considering the cost of all the parts that would have to go into a working laptop - a government minister has already said the cost may be edging closer to $20, and even that still seems circumspect.
We’re more than happy to be proved wrong though. We’ll bring you more should it materialise next week, and if not, you can sure we’ll be bringing out the vapourware iron to brand it with. Source; http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/01/30/10-laptop-to-be-unveiled-monday/
