Hi, thank you for reading this. I can't remove this OnLineGames Trojan virus, which is causing malicious files that are removed by my spware, but the Trojan itself cannot be removed. The only program that finds the OnLineGames Trojan is "Exterminate It!" but I have to pay to have it remove the virus. I already have full Norton IS 2009, and I don't feel like I should have to pay for this program unless it is a last resort (especially since it may not work anyway). The programs I have installed to try and remove it are:

Spybot Search and Destroy
SuperAntiSpyware
Spyware Blaster
AVG Free Edition
Malawarebytes Anti-Malaware
Advanced Systemcare 3
Lavasoft Adaware Anniverary Edition
Norton Internet Security 2009
Trend Micro HijackThis

This is WAY too many programs for what I want on my computer, but I'm getting desperate. FYI, the first four programs on the list are ones that I already had installed at the time of the infection, which I believe was on Saturday.

The specific registry that Exterminate It! tells me is infected with the OnLineGames Trojan is this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows, AppInit_DLLs

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook that I've had for about two years. I'm not familiar with changing registry files manually, although I will do that if there is a safe method.

I have looked online and do not know what else to do. Let me know if you require additional information. Please help ASAP! Thank you so much!

-Andromeda

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)

    O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

I want to run a rootkit scan.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\karna.dat

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Sorry it took so long to come back; I had to go to work. The DDS text is pasted below. Also, if you have recommendations about what programs I should keep on my system, it would be greatly appreciated. I have way too many now, and it seems to be slowing down my system significantly (although that could have been the virus). Thanks a million for helping me out!

Doesn't appear to be any malware.

As for programs, I would recommend you remove Adaware sinec you already have Spybots TeaTimer running.
I want to see what else is installed.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Thank you so much for helping me remove the malware! I ran the Exterminate It program and it no longer detected the trojan. I want to do regular scans for awhile to be sure it hasn't re-established somewhere, and hopefully SpyBot and Anti-Malware will do the job for that. It was a fluke that I got it, and I will be more careful now. Thanks for the program input too.

Hello.
There is one or two things we need to do to make sure this doesn't return.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

    Adobe Reader 7.0.8
    Advanced SystemCare 3
    Exterminate It!
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    LimeWire 4.12.11
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
    Viewpoint Media Player

I see were running an old version of Adobe Reader, this is maybe how the infection got in, by abusing the old verion, we need to install the new version.
I have also listed Advanced system care and Exterminate it as you already have MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware in use, these two are good enough.
I have listed Limewire because 99% of the stuff on Limewire will be an infection, please remove Limewire in order to prevent anymore infections.

If you use Adobe Reader, please download and install version 9 from here:

Thank you! I removed the programs you mentioned. Can I remove Avast, too? It doesn't seem that great and my computer is still acting pretty slow (although better than when I had the virus). I don't know how much of this is Norton 2009 because I only installed it this past weekend. I assume I should only have one full antivirus program (had AVG before). If there's anything else that seems like it could be slowing it down, I will be happy to remove it...anything to get my computer to respond faster again. Thanks!

I hate to bother you with something else, but you seem very knowledgable and I have wondered if this is a virus problem too. I have had a typing delay for a long time now (not my actual keyboard) and it is not consistent. Mid-typing, the computer's reaction in showing the letters will suddenly slow or halt and I have to wait for it for few seconds. It's really annoying for someone like me who doesn't look at the keyboard while typing, but depends on the words on the screen showing up as I type. Could this be caused by a virus? I've not found an answer on the web. I thought it happened when I installed Mozilla Firefox ages ago, but it remained after I uninstalled it. However, the other day I found out that there are Firefox components still installed on my computer that can't be deleted. Is this possibly virus related or maybe related to remaining Firefox files?

Hello.
Please remove Norton, Norton is a BIG product and that maybe slowing your machine down, but keep avast, your machine NEEDS an AV or you will find yourself back here and I'm sure you don't want that.

Lets clean temp files.

Download ATF Cleaner

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:

  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

See if uninstalling Norton made any difference.
