Hi and thank you for your article on this.
I unfortunately have been infected, have manually
removed all the associated files, but the pop-up
still exists. The bigger problem is that I absolutely
cannot run or install any programs. If I double-click
any program to begin, such as the Malwarebyte's,
I get an initial 'hourglass' then nothing. So I cannot
run anything to clean me up, even in Safe Mode.

I am contemplating either an expensive trip to the
local computer shop, or a re-install of XP. Also of concern
is that my LAN connection seems to have gotten shot as
well. And opening Explorer always launches Spyware Guard again.

Any help is appreciated, such as maybe I can launch Malwarebytes
from a DOS prompt? But don't know how. Thank you.

odaboda - Please do not visit a comp shop.
Read the stickied thread in malware removal and post a Hijack This log.

Thanks but I did not have Hijack installed and am not able to run anything now. There are also no associated files remaining from Spyware Guard left to submit, though my comp. remains locked up, another website poster had the same problem- some remaining file exists which keeps the program going. The only thing I can think of is launching SmitFraudFix and Malwarebytes on boot up from CD- I have saved these .exe's to seperate discs- but unaware how to do that if at all possible. Otherwise I have no use of the computer, cannot run anything at all. Cannot go online with that comp.

Hello.
If the machine will not let you run any .exe files, we have other ways of getting what we need.
But if the machine is completely unusable, best option is to probably format.

I cannot launch any exe's with the exception being Ad Aware, but the descriptions are outdated and I cannot update it. Ad Aware continually finds the same problem- Virtumonde- which I don't know if it is related. It removes it but comes back. From viewing other sites about Spyware Guard, it looks as though I might have missed some registry files. But if you have 'other ways of getting what you need', I would be curious. The comp. is not completely unusable in the sense of still being able to browse folders, etc. When booting into Windows normally, without Safe Mode, it will not always make it through the Welcome screen.

Yay.
@Doctor Inferno - Split this off into a malware removal topic please. Smile...

@odaboda - Yes, virtumonde is annoying and will keep coming back unless we get it all. Vundo (virtumonde) makes hundreds of copies of itself if we don't remove it.
This isn't an .exe file, so it should be able to bypass the malware

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Thanks for all help but I caved into wifey pressure to take into shop. She takes online classes and needed back right away. They reformatted, said impossible to find all the files Spyware creates. Lesson learned- create a System Restore point or scan the file before launching. This was a torrent disguised as Adobe InDesign on isohunt.com which has since been taken off. Another lesson, don't download anything without a positive comment on it. I have downloaded many 'shared' files before but finally the snake got me.
