I've recentley started having problems with my system again. It has been running awfully slow, especially when online. It also keeps rebooting itself. It seems there is something trying to access my usb drive frequently too, even when my computer is static.

I am behind a firewall, and havent noticed any traffic coming in, and I don't appear to have any spyware/malware, at least I hope I don't.

Also I keep getting the windows explorer needs to close message, then my computer locks up completely.

Any help would be appreciated

Regards

Dave

Let's try Digitalocksmith's earlier solution on some else's topic for the explorer crashes.

Digitalocksmith wrote:
Ok......Often Windows Explorer crashes are also caused by 3rd party shell extensions that are not functioning properly.

To try and find if a 3rd party shell extension is causing your Windows Explorer to crash on certain actions, you'll need to download this file below.

It will let you view & disable shell extensions.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

After you downloaded & executed it, ShelExView will show all shell extensions installed on your system.

You could sort the entries so that you'll have all non Microsoft shell extensions grouped together.

Next, select all these non Microsoft shell extensions, and disable them.

If this does not help with the issue then we need to go to the next level and do some debugging!

Thanks for that. I follow the steps and see how we go. Will disabling the non Microsoft shells stop some of my apps/programs from working?

Hi

I have done the scan, and no threats were found, I can still post the log if you need.
I am using Kaspersky 2009, and hacker smacker for the firewall. I was using ZoneAlarm Pro, before my license expired

Is this an appropiate place to post a HJT Log?

When I rebooted my system after disabling the non-Microsoft shells. I got the message..

"Windows can't shutdown MCI command handling window"

I've never seen this before. I restored the shells that I disabled, and to no avail. I haven't made any other changes to my system.

There should be more to that message, can you provide the whole message?

End Program - MCI command handling window" cant shut down

This appears in the end program dialogue box, my system hangs for a short while when I choose to end the the program.

Ah. I was expecting there to be some application name behind. Anyway, try this, download CCleaner:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Clear the temporary files and the registry, if it asks to you backup the registry allow it to do so.

Do you still have the same problem?

Ok I did that and still had the same problem. But I did update my "cc" and the problem did not happen. After 4 reboots the message has come back, and I am still getting heinously slow startup and boot down times.

I've checked my autostart entries for this and there isn't much there, and i've also disabled automatic updates to see if that was an issue...
So maybe I should do a reboot?

If it worked properly 4 times then it should be something creating a certain temp file or registry key causing this.

Start >> msconfig >> startup tab find anything similar to Media Control Interface or MCI and uncheck it.

In the services tab find anything similar to Media Control Interface or MCI and uncheck it.
