descriptionSolvedTrojan.Zlob.G - what a pest!

more_horiz
It looks like Zlob G became very popular on this forum.

I downloaded a video file and several subtitles earlier today. Computer rebooted on its own few hours later and after that i started getting popups from windows firewall about trojan.zlob.g with redirects to an antivirus site. Also IE stopped working with a security alert javascript window. Firefox was working fine at this point.
Went through a series of attempts to diagnose and remove the pest.
Ran avira antivirus which found some different virus which might have been a false positive which it also found in the past.
It didnt complete the run since another tool (combofix which now i see you warn against running by myself - sorry Smile...) stopped it.
Ran spyhunter (and unistalled it when spybot warned against it)which at least seams to have fixed my internet home address.
Ran Spybot and windows update.
Ran Hijackthis.
Now things seem to be working ok but I have a feeling I am not done yet:

Hello.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{5ae268cd-7b58-11db-83b8-806d6172696f}]

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

What problems remain?

Thanks a lot. You people got hammered lately with this particular trojan.

Avira thinks I am clean.
Found couple more pests with AVG: trojan horse generic_c.IKY in Java/sun/cache and possibly another false positive.
Spybot also cleaned something, in most part seemingly related to Spyhunter while Ad-Aware thinks that i am clean.

I dont have any gross signs of infection (at least nothing that i can tell).

Lastly, I was a bit worried about the open ports that appeared in the ComboFix log but you didn't seem to lose sleep over it. Can i safely ignore it?

descriptionSolvedRe: Trojan.Zlob.G - what a pest!

Hello.

The files in the open ports are legit, but we can close them if you want to. Smile...

I notice you are running more than one AV (Anti-virus). Norton, Avira and AVG.
It is not a good idea to have more than one AV, they conflict and cause more problems like false positives.

Press Start > Control Panel > open "Add/remove programs"
Allow the list to load and uninstall these items by selecting each one and pressing the "Remove" button to the right.

AVG8
Norton Antivirus

I also notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
    O4 - Startup: StockTicker.lnk.disabled
    O4 - Global Startup: Windows Search.lnk.disabled
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0) -
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - (no file)

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Delete this folder in bold:
C:\Qoobox

What problems remain?

I have the AVG service on manual start (not automatic) in case i need to scan a downloaded file with it in addition to Avira which is my native AV program. I cleaned leftovers from prior Norton AV as well.

I am unable to get rid of the first and last lines in your recommendations, i.e

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - (no file)

I had teatimer off while attempting that. Other than that it looks promising with no more obvious signs of infection...

Hello.
Okay, doesn't matter about the two leftovers.
Avira found a virus in the Java cache from your last post it seems, so lets flush that away.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.
