Hi, I'm new to geekpolice.

Platform:  HP Envy Laptop, Intel i7, Windows 10 Pro 64, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Intel embedded gpu (shared ram)
Issue:  After a recent MS update I get 0xc000000e error and won't boot

This is the same or similar to this thread:  "boot fail - 0xc000000e File:winload.efi on blue scree"

I did the steps regarding bootrec cmd's as stateed.  They don't work or have similar results

Does anyone know why this happens?  It happens just after the recent MS update.

Workaround:  I've restored my system from an Acronis Backup and turned off MS Updates by changing to a metered network and delaying any updates.

Another note: We've noticed that msconfig.exe changes from "normal" to "Selective" and you can't put it back to "normal".

Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks...

Hi @natzure

Can you please tell us the name of the Windows update you think may have cause the boot issue.

How to temporarily prevent a Windows Update from reinstalling in Windows 10

You don't need to worry about Selective startup in System Configuration (MSconfig), Selective startup will happen if you have disabled startup program or service.

Hi,

version 1703 (I was on 1709 and tried to back rev to fix this issue)
OS Build 15063.726
Win 10 pro 64

I don't know which update is causing this because I can't get into the system once it happens.  I believe, from what I've read, it's the October update.

I've already implemented the "don't update" process by enabling metered network and also by pushing out the install dates where possible.

If I turn them off and allow it to update, I get this blue screen error each time.

Thanks.

If your computer CPU was AMD i would say latest patch from Microsoft causing the blue screen of death.

If you think Windows 10 version 1709 causing the issue you can follow below instructions at my tutorial to delay feature updates up to 365 days.

Next time you get a blue screen please if you can post a screenshot of it.

Upload Dump Files:
NOTE: If using a disk cleaning utility, please stop using it while we are troubleshooting your issues.
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service. Then post the link to it in your topic so that we can download it.

Also, search your entire hard drive for files ending in .dmp, .mdmp, and .hdmp. Zip up any that you find and upload them with your next post.

Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): http://www.carrona.org/setmini.html

How is everything progressing, do you need more assistant on this issue?

Hi,
It takes me a few hours to fully repro the issue as I have to image my disk so I can get back to a working system.

I'll try to get the log files mentioned previously.

So far, I think this is a corruption of the fat32 efi partition, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help.

If you want we can assign a drive letter to EFI partition and execute check disk command to repair any file system errors.

Thanks, I've done that.  No errors.
I think it or some file in it may get corrupted during the update.  There seem to be others that have run into this.  I've seen some IT Admins where 6 out of 100 have this exact issue.  So far, no one seems to have a fix.  The steps provided to the "not accessible device" seem to be the closest to the issue.

Also, this works fine (right now) as long as I don't let MS update it.

Have you tried bcdboot command after winload.efi not found error?

descriptionSolvedRe: Win 10 boot fail: BSOD error 0xc000000e winload.efi not found

Yes, that's actually how I got to you.  Your info, I think, is what I need to try.

When I've tried the bcd options, I get a file not found error

I've got your input from the other thread. Should I try that?

Can I assume that the fat32 partion in the C drive is the one that we need to access?

I can get to to it now from dos but in windows says I don't have permission

You need to boot your computer with Windows Installation Media and i can guide you from Command Prompt in Windows Recovery Environment. You cannot modify EFI partition from booted Windows OS. There is nothing wrong with EFI partition boot files right now so repairing them is a waste of time i can guide you to repair EFI partition boot files when Windows OS stop booting again with winload.efi not found error.

That's great...I have your notes from the other thread.

Let me set up another system so I can communicate with you and then I'll let this system update and crash.

Thanks again for your help.

I have to run an incremental to the existing image so if this doesn't work, I can get back to "here".
