How to Defragment Hard Disk Drive

Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer.  Disk Defragmenter in Windows rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, however, it doesn't always run consistently, so if you notice files are taking longer to load or you just want to double-check every month or so, you can see how fragmented the drive is in Windows.

Solid State Drives (SSD) work differently than traditional mechanical hard drives. Conventional wisdom is that SSDs don't need to be defragmented and doing so can also wear down the drive.

1. Bring up your Start menu and then and enter Defragment into the search field. You will now see ‘Defragment and Optimize Drives’ appear. Click it and wait for a window.

2. Select one of the drives shown in the list and then click Analyse. This process will run for some time and show you if defragmentation is required. Only use the next step if necessary.

3. Click the Optimise icon with the drive selected and the process will begin to clean up the hard drive. Be patient because this process can take a long time to complete on some drives.
