Stupid....stupid....stupid.....

Ok - so I open Firefox, my 5 tabs open like normal except the first tab was a "FireFox Urgent Update" screen (not a pop-up, actually one of my tabs.)  I was moving too fast and clicked download / run the update.

I know better but like I said.... stupid....stupid....stupid.....

My AVG flagged IDP.ALEXA.51 virus right away and said it successfully fixed it.

I ran adwcleaner, malwarebytes, JRT and Security Check - the results are below.  Can you please verify if I have any lingering infections?

THANK YOU!!!!

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
*************************************************************************
Please do not attach your logs unless absolutely necessary. Copy and paste them in your reply(ies)
********************************************************
Please run AdwCleaner again and hit the delete button.

Update Your Java (JRE)

Old versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

First Verify your Java Version

If there are any other version(s) installed then update now.

Get the new version (if needed)

If your version is out of date install the newest version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment.

Note: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Be sure to close ALL open web browsers before starting the installation.

Remove any old versions

1. Download JavaRa and unzip the file to your Desktop.
2. Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
3. Once complete exit JavaRA.

Additional Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and reboot your computer.

Thanks Dave!!

Sorry about the attachments - I will paste output files.

When I originally ran AdwCleaner I did click the "clean" button and it said it removed everything.  I ran it again after receiving your instructions and it didn't find anything.  Is there something else I should be doing?

Java is up to date and there are no old versions.

I ran ESET - it found 10 items.  I will paste output below.  Thank you!!

Is there something else I should be doing?

No, everything was cleaned.
I would say that your computer is clean. Let's clean up.

Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
Click Disk Cleanup from there.

FireFox-Patch.js Diskcleanup2

Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.

FireFox-Patch.js Diskcleanup

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)
***************************************
This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download DelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create Registry backup
  • Purge System Restore Points
  • Re-set system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

I suggest using WOT - Web of Trust. WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free.

Wow - I was just typing a "Thanks Dave!" note to let you know I appreciated your help (which I do!), let you know I ran the disk clean up, delfix and had installed WOT - and this pop up appeared out of no where!!!  Seems like something is still lurking.  Any additional suggestions?

(I can't find a way to imbed a screen shot so I will attach it as a .jpg - if there is a different way please just let me know. Thx!)

Oh yeah - still infected.....  I have received 6-7 more pop ups already today.  I realize I didn't attach the screen shot from yesterday but I don't think it is relevant - the pop ups today claimed to be more firefox patch updates, microsoft 888 # to call or else my computer will be shut down, xfinity survey, etc...

Any suggestions to try to get rid of this infection?

I need to see the screenshot of the pop-ups.

Thanks for continuing to help me Dave - much appreciated!!

I will attach 4 that I took.  The first is the actual screen I clicked on to download the virus.  The second is AVG detecting it.  The third is the first popup from the next morning.  The forth is the the second popup that morning which was trying to get me to do the virus thing all over again.  I didn't capture the xfinity, microsoft, etc. popups that then occurred.

First of all, uninstall Firefox and any other program that may be installed just prior to to when this happened and then open IE. Let me know if anything else shows up.
