Would there be any reason to not clean up any files scanned on AdwCleaner, i.e., Registry or Firefox? Tried copying files line by line to post in the text of this topic and using Ctrl C to no avail.

Also, I am quite a computer novice. I hardly know the technical/maintenance aspect of it. Avast tells me that my system needs to be repaired by a certified Engineer. Avast, Windows Defender, McAfee, etc. have all been installed somehow. I've had applications, windows, and miscellaneous failure messages for quite some time now. The laptop is 4 years old. They want $180 for one year to repair it or a $120 one time charge. Should I just pay to have it professionally done or should I get a new laptop? Might anybody be able to help me salvage this?

Thank you!

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
*************************************************************************
I have complete trust in AdwCleaner. The things that it finds should be removed.
Avast tells me that my system needs to be repaired by a certified Engineer. Avast, Windows Defender, McAfee, etc. have all been installed somehow. I've had applications, windows, and miscellaneous failure messages for quite some time now.

This doesn't sound correct to me. Perhaps, we should run some additional scans.

I'm assuming that the issue in this thread is related to this one.

I went through Malwarebytes. No infected files were found. Then when I followed Superdave's instructions on downloading the Junkware Removal Tool. I couldn't just click on the words "Junkware Removal Tool" from Superdave's reply, so I downloaded a Cnet version from the internet. I ignored the suspicious file warning and downloaded it anyway. That was probably my first mistake.

Yesterday several pop up ads appeared on this website. Then I eventually could not gain internet access at all. In the Internet Explorer browser, the websites are questionable as they may be infected. In the Mozilla browser, part of Yahoo loads (pictures missing, more ads than usual). In Google Chrome, only the default Google loads and if I type into the search box all the data just jumps to the URL address.

I used the System Restore in the the Start button on the laptop. That probably didn't do any harm, correct? I can turn on the computer. The MicroSoft Office applications appear to be working. Can you help me without on-line access? I probably need to uninstall the various anti-virus and only keep Avast on there, correct? Or should I take the computer into to be repaired?

Thank you!

Please try running MBAM in Safe Mode with Networking. If it runs, try running it in Normal Mode.

Sorry Dave!

As I was rereading your first reply, I realize that you had referenced to still being able to help even if the infected computer did not have internet access.

1. I tried to run the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in the safe mode and it did not open when I double-clicked it. I am fairly certain that it will run in the normal mode as the window pops open asking, "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" So should I run it in normal mode although I couldn't do so in safe mode?
2. Since I have the product key code for MicroSoft office, I don't see a need to copy the programs. As all of the other programs are downloadable from the internet, correct?
3. Should I copy all pictures, MS Word, and Excel files?
4. Am I going to have to eventually reinstall the operating system? The CD's and manual may be misfiled or buried in my stuff. Can you get around that? Most importantly, I am concerned that my computer proficiency level may be too low to take on such a task and that I'll have to bring the laptop in for repair.
5. Should I uninstall McAfee, etc. and only keep Avast for now?

Thank you very much and have a nice evening! Smile...

Hi Dave:

I just wanted to let you know that I tried to run MBAM in Normal Mode by double-clicking on the icon. Then a window pops open asking, "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" I click yes. A circle spins to the right of the cursor; however, it stops within seconds. Nothing runs and loads.

Thanks again!

I understand. It's some of your protection that's blocking it. Please allow it to run because MBAM is safe to use.
Since I have the product key code for MicroSoft office, I don't see a need to copy the programs. As all of the other programs are downloadable from the internet, correct?

It depends what programs you have on your computer. If you don't have the disks for the program, it's probable something that was downloaded.
Should I copy all pictures, MS Word, and Excel files?

Save any files, pictures, videos and music that's important to you. You can save them to an external drive or DVD's
The CD's and manual may be misfiled or buried in my stuff.

If you can't locate the OS disk you can probably borrow one but it must be the very same version that you currently have on your computer.
Should I uninstall McAfee, etc. and only keep Avast for now?

You should only have one AV and one Firewall active on your computer. If you have trouble uninstalling McAfee you can use this tool

McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool - Use on McAfee, AOL distributions of McAfee, CA distributions of McAfee - McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)

Ok, please run the other scans and also this one.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.

  • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page for performing a scan.
  • Caution: This is a beta version so also read the disclaimer and back up all your data before using.
  • When the scan completes, click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats found and reboot the computer if prompted to do so.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • If there are problems with Internet access, Windows Update, Windows Firewall or other system issues, run the fixdamage tool located in the folder Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit was run from and reboot your computer.
  • Two files (mbar-log-YYYY-MM-DD, system-log.txt) will be created and saved within that same folder.
  • Copy and paste the contents of these two log files in your next reply.
